thinking of parting out the 240D
You know what they say - there is no cheap mercedes.
They also say if you find yourself digging a hole stop digging. I have a 1979 240D - runs well - but its a rust bomb and a money pit. I'm trying to sell the car now - but I bet I could get more selling the pieces than I can selling the entire car. So I have a couple questions for you guys. how much is the engine worth? Good running engine - new nozzles - Unknown mileage but I'd guess around 120k How much is the 4sp auto tranny worth? Shifts strong and has no issues at all. since the body is pretty much shot I doubt I can get anything for that except scrap. Thoughts? Is it worth the trouble? |
That's a good one! What is a 240D 4 sp auto tranny worth???
Your real value is in the engine, and you would need to provide compression #s to get a serious buyer...... |
yep, compression numbers sell. As well as pictures
|
I was just looking at ebay - looks like the engines go for $700 w/o compression numbers.
I can borrow a compression tester from a friend of mine and see what the real numbers are. Assuming I dont sell the entire car tonight. I think I'd be happy with $800 for the engine/IP pump and all the accessories bolted on. Then its nickle and dime stuff until I crush the rest of the car. |
Sounds like you want to part it more than sell it, sooo, I would guess the manual trans, shifter, shift rods, manual Fly-wheel, front section of the drive Line, peddle assy, hydraulic clutch line, and maybe throw in the pressure plate and clutch disk, you could get $700.00, maybe a little more. and if you have an automatic trans cross mount with it, that would be all you would need for a 4-spd swap.
The engine, guessing on the milage doesn`t cut it, need to maybe know the compression numbers, the health of the engine. $400 to $800 depending on who is buying it. The differential maybe $50 to $100. how are the window regulators? manual I would guess. maybe $25 each. e-bay it then you have to ship things and the e-bay charges. then there is Craigs list, and having people come to your house could be a problem. then if you list it over a larger area, you might have to ship it there also. Then there are the cheap skates here :D on the forum. Charlie Dang, some you guy are fast at typing. no one had posted when I first read this. |
There is, I still believe, a completely rebuild 616 with a 4 speed up for $800, so you might want to change your estimate. I'd probably pay $450-550 for a good, verified compression numbers, om616.
For $700 I could probably find a good om617 turbo. |

BTW - it has power windows - all work - sun roof doesn't open (will manually)
Seats are great except for the drivers seat - it has the swim noodle fix. and a seperation at one seam. Dash is trashed ODO doesn't work -but clock and all else does. has working rear defroster in the back glass - I could probably nickle it up to $1000 maybe a little more depending on what people are looking for - before taking it to the recycler myself for that last few $$. wonder if any one would want to buy the VIN and title. |
What color is the interior? I need a seat bottom and I think the drivers and passenger side interchange
Also a little curious about the engine. Try and make a YouTube vid of it running. |

The Vin# and Title go with the chassis, not something that can be swaped to another Chassis. Charlie |

Parting cars generates more money but I haven't found it worth the trouble. I'd look for another 123 & keep yours for parts. I'm looking for a 126 parts car but I am cheap. People here seem to thing any old non-running, rusty SD is worth $2000. Salvage yard says he buys them for $250 - $500 all day.
