Compressor bracket... 1980 300SD

Been monkeying with this some this afternoon.
From the front: http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww112/jhoff/mod.jpg I believe I can weld a plate onto the adjusting bracket and then weld 2 tubes onto the plate that will allow me to use one of the holes for the R4 bracket. I'm pretty sure I can weld a tang onto the bracket that will allow me to use the lug that's circled. I'll only have 2 bolts but they'll be in different planes and there will be 2 tubes on either side of the original compressor through hole. The yellow shows where the parts will be welded. There will be another tube on the other side of the lug. Just kind of a Mock-up at this point. I'm going to have to pull the oil cooler lines all the way out and probably the fan, *sigh*... It'll clear the cooler lines fine but it's too hard to build stuff with them in the way... Does this make any sense? Anyone think it'll be too weak and fly off the engine at 80 mph? |

Jon here is a link with some pictures of a Euro 300D with the a/c bracket shown from below. In the original installation they put the adjustment linkage on bottom and used the upper fastener as the pivot point. The original bracket bolted to the side of the block. I think there are three bolt holes on the drivers side under the pwr strg pump.
I'm trying to remember which way the engine turns but that may be something to keep in mind in regards to where the adjustment arms are. You don't want the adjustment arms to be taking the side load that the belt will be putting on the compressor. You want the pivot point to do that. euro compressor Looks like you are doing a good job with it:). |

I thought about doing an adjustment like you describe but it will add more nut/bolt unions which can rattle loose. Man, I studied and studied all those euro brackets and couldn't figure out a way to do it like that with the engine in the car. I basically just found out where the pulley had to be and built around that. The bracket actually required a lot of work just to be usable. I just hope it's going to be strong enough to handle the load. |

Not to send you off in a new direction or anything, but have you considered using an turnbuckle type assembly for the adjustment. A buddy used a kit from billet specialties to put a serpentine belt system on an older small block ford, and their a/c kit used a turnbuckle. It worked pretty slick, and might be something to consider if you hit a wall with your current track.

Looks like you are using a heavy enough plate. You should be ok with it.

I was assuming Grade 8 when I posted that...( meaning 5 radial marks on SAE bolts ) but I am only chopped liver and can not be expected to get the details right.. LOL
