leaks . . .

Forgot to mention, usually the o-rings, gaskets need to be replaced on the manual primer pump by now, and if the drips are coming from that side of the engine, very good chance it's time to disassemble that and replace all rubber. While there . . . may as well replace the power steer hose with new, as if you ever have a leak there, you will have to do the entire disassembly all over again!!!

Right now leaning toward the lift pump. I can't tell exactly where the leak is from. It just drips from the IP onto the front sub frame. Checked the fuel routing, hoses and clamps are dry

It looks like someone used a white type of form a gasket between the IP and lift pump. It is also moist in that area above, and wet on the bottom side.

What does sealing up the lift pump? An o-ring and gasket? As a temporary fix can black rtv be used in place of gasket?

Is there anywhere else this style of injector pump would leak from?

Thanks whunter for all your responses. I will update my sig soon to include the 1975 240d. That is the car that currently is having the problems. Is the lift pump baciclly the same for the 75 240d, as the 85 190d? They look different.

The nose/shaft seal/O-rings have been discontinued = no longer available.

You might try using these kits.

Leak

The white stuff is probably plain old plumbers' tape. Don't know how well it's rated for fuel, though . . . LOL. The exposure to the diesel might be breaking it down, so, I'd start by unscrewing where that is connected, cleaning it on both sides and screw it back together, . . . tight. That might be where your problem lies, although, if the lift kit is the manual pump (in case you have to prime it by hand when you run out of fuel), then, obviously, that will probably need to be rebuilt, with new rubber.

Don't forget to replace the power steering hydraulic hose underneath it while you have it apart. That hose is an example of putting something in and building the rest of the car around it!!!! Will be $200 labor to tear that all apart again, later on, when the hydraulic hose rots and cracks, which it is guaranteed to do over time. So . . . change it now, with new clamps while you have everything out of the way and easier access to it. Don't be cheap like my ex-husband on this one . . . ROFL!!!! (One reason we're not still married . . . ROFL (not cause he was cheap, cause he was an idiot and always did things the hard way!!!!))

I suggest starting the diagnosis with simple issues.

Update

A little late on a fix on the 75 240d

Removed the delivery valves off of the ip. Could of sworn that I read there wasn't o-rings on the delivery valves. There was on mine anyways. Old o-rings were brittle and hard. Replaced with o-rings with a generic o-ring kit. Next removed the lift pump and replaced the small o-ring in the housing. Car had no trouble starting for the 3 month I drove it before parking for winter. Now I need a new IP diaphragm...

piccolovic 04-21-2012 12:53 AM

If it sat for three months, did you try purging the fuel system and replacing the fuel???

NickCox 04-23-2012 02:18 AM

I haven't got it going from the winter storage yet... I didn't state that the car sat for 3 months and wouldn't start. I drove it 3 months until I parked it for winter.
