Odd transmission problem

Hey guys,

So I've been having a weird transmission problem basically since I've had the car. When the car is cold it shifts on time but a little hard. When it's been warmed up it shifts pretty well and goes through all the gears in order. However when it has been warm for a while or driven a long distance is when I get my problem.

The shifts get really smooth, almost flaring even, but shift 25 to 50 percent earlier than it does when it is shifting normally. Another thing is that it also likes to skip 3rd gear and go straight to 4th.

So far I have flushed the transmission twice, replaced the vacuum control valve (which I think might be a problem), adjusted said valve, and replace some vacuum connectors around the engine including transmission line connectors.

What I'm wondering is if it's a mechanical, vacuum, or fluid issue. The heat of the tranny being a factor is confusing. Fluid is the proper Castrol fluid and filters have both been made by Mann.

Let me know what you think!

HMMMMMM. Does not appear we have anyone in here that is really good with transmissions! lol
I have been "standing by'' waiting for someone knowladgeable to post a rely to this, as my own transmission problem is very similar.

On mine it does not seem to make a difference if I have just pulled out of the driveway cold, or after 2 hours of driving, it ****s into 2nd, and reguardless of how much pedal I am using it only stays in 2nd for 2 to 3 seconds, then shifts into 3rd and then goes instantly into 4th! It is IMPOSSIBLE to have any kind of decent acceleration unless I am manually shifting through the gears. That, in and of itself, would be no biggy -Exept- after 418,XXX miles the shift linkage is wore slap out so even manual shifts are kinda tricky.
Sorry, not trying to hijack your thread, just VERY frustrated with the MB transmission. I have rebuilt a GM700R4 and have never seen or heard of a problem like this before.

Can ANYONE help us?

Your problem is called stacked shifts and there are threads here on the topic. Some modifications can be done with the bowden cable but I think one of the shift kits helps solve the problem also.

Also found this:
It's CRITICAL... how you set your transmission's vacuum system on your diesel MBZ...

Not sure if it has any effect on our particular problem, but I think now that I have got the engine tuned from a sluggish dog into a rip-snot'n beast, it would be a great investment in time to go through the vacuume lines & replace them all one by one. I am certain that 28 years of age has taken it's toll on the old gal's vacuume system! lol

Tons of info on that thread. Before doing anything to the vacuum system I would adjust the bowden cable to move the shift points upward. That should separate those shifts more. This assumes you have a model with a bowden cable or rod. Which model do you have?

Bowden rod. Definitely do not have a cable.

It's weird because it only stacks shifts when the transmission is warm.

No idea on why your problem happens when warm. Coyote's problem is an easier one.

There is a temperature compensator inside the trans valve body on some of the trans, dont know if yours has it. Its shown in the ATSIC manual.
