124 E300D whiiiiiiiineee

Hi, I'm trying to troubleshoot a problem with my e300d. After driving at speed for long periods in Germany recently it has developed a fairly high-pitched whine that's most noticeable over 2500rpm. It seems to come from the middle/front of the car and peaks at around 3000rpm. It's there with sometimes a fairly pronounced oscillation at around 55mph, gets loud to a steady pitch then becomes less pronounced as the rpm/speed increases. At 70 it's quite annoying in the cabin but at 80 it's not as noticeable. There is no vibration or other signs something is obviously wrong, everything appears as normal. I've checked the exhaust, wheel bearings, flex discs, diff fluid and engine accessories, so I'm thinking maybe prop-shaft centre bearing or gearbox related? The gearbox and engine are operating as normal, the car drives perfectly apart from this whine!

cheers.

the car is obviously possessed, you will need to bring the car to me and I will exorcise the demons from it over the next 5 years... I'll send you an email with my bill when I'm finished with your car.

My first guess would be a (the?) carrier bearing. If not that then a wheel bearing.
