Glow Plug Light Comes Back on After Start

I have an 85 300SD that I'm trying to get back on the road. I travel quite a bit, so my restoration project has been kind of slow. I try to fire the car up and take it around the block once a week or so. Last week, I started it up, the glow plug light stayed on for a few seconds (it's currently 98 degrees here in south Texas), went out, and the car started right up. After it started, the glow plug light came back on, and stayed on. I parked it for a week, and then tried to start it again last night. Again, the glow plug light came on and went off after a few seconds, but the car wouldn't start because the battery was dead. I left it on the charger all night and again this morning, the same glow plug light routine - lights for a few seconds, car started right up, but then the light stayed on.

I searched for glow plug relay threads, but I didn't see this particular issue as it relates to draining the battery. Is it possible the after I shut the car off, the glow plug relay remains energized and drains the battery? The battery is a couple of years old, although the car sat for 6 months or so with the PO without be driven. I had to replace the alternator about 9 months ago, and the battery tested good at that time. After replacing the alternator, I hadn't had any charging issues at all and the car has started right up every week.

Thanks for any help that anyone can provide.

I remember reading somewhere that this is a sign that there is something wrong with the glow plug system. Check your owners guide and see what it says...

After thought:
Try disconnecting the glow plug relay after you start the car and keep it unplugged until you need them again (you shouldn't need them it that weather )... If the problem is still there then you know it is something else.

you have a dead glow plug

The relay monitors the plugs and if one or more are dead it will light the dash lite to let you know.
