PIECE OF CAKE ON A 116

Behind the glovebox:

Stick your right hand in that large, black, rubbery orifice to the left of the blower housing.

Here's the plenum that the rubber attaches to:

You can't see in there but there is room for your hand and you can feel the entire top of the evaporator. There's enough room to do a really thorough cleaning of the blower side which is what catches most of the crud.

Mine didn't feel like it had any big wads of goat hair or anything but my hand came away with a lot of fine black dust.

Unless the evaporator is leaking I can't see any reason why I would need more access than I have. Would be easy to thread a temp probe in there as well...

Volvo 240: replacing the heater fan by slicing a hole in one of the heater boxes saves about a day of labor

Mazda Miata: the heater core is easy to remove -- if you cut one of the pipes with a Dremel. Cut the new core's input pipe to replace it, and slip on a rubber hose with clamps to re-seal the system. (The output pipe comes precut for some reason.)

I was just saying that my methods will probably not work for you.

Anyway. This is how you do it. It just is:

Use your washer pump and the vacuum stuff left over from fixing the door locks...

You'll have to buy a toothbrush Greg. They'll be over by the deodorant.

I forget I'm on the diesel forum...

I plan on giving it a good scrubbing with the washer/toothbrush pumping carbonated water and then hit it with some commercial coil cleaner followed by water to neutralize the coil cleaner. I had a bottle of soda water that I tested with and it moved a lot of water and foamed up after leaving the brush.

I'll have to figure something else out for the coil cleaner because I don't want to run it through my washer pump.

I feel a lot better now that I've figured out how to clean the evaporator...

I was thinking about a cabin filter after I get the coil clean. Nothing fancy, maybe just a cut down fiberglass filter from a home AC unit.
