What type of engines do they use? I'm rural so I seem to get the big truck!

Cool...waiting for one to bring me my new Becker Europa II right now!

kerry 07-14-2011 04:51 PM

Hmmmmm? Haven't they been this way for about 8 yrs now?

I believe they use the same V6 used in the E class and ML class. It is, however, derated from the passenger car HP.

I've seen fedex sprinters since 2004... strange you haven't seen them until now... but I'm assuming they have the OM612, OM647, or the OM642 (probably not the M111 or the M272). My van has the OM647 I believe (316 CDI)

Not sure of the current engine but they used to have the 5cyl turbo diesel I think. Or was it 6?

Yea it was 5 because the 6 cylinder diesel (OM642) was not available until the 2007 model. The OM647 is inline 5 rated at 154 HP

I passed one in my Driveway still badged as a Freightliner, We've had then awhile. nice trucks. I believe it's only the express levels of shipment here that are the sprinter vans we still have the large box on wheels

I thought FedEx guys were all owner/operators.

Not very easy to park or see much of anything though... The engines can get that thing up to speed pretty quickly and it can get up to like 90 mph... Turbo kicking in once almost made me crash (trying to test acceleration in a back alley). One of the coolest things is the fact that it is a Sequential Automatic, so it will shift gears by itself buy you can tap the shifter to the left to go down a gear or to the right to go up a gear so you can either improve acceleration, go down a mountain/hill at a controllable speed (using the transmission almost as a brake), or easily power up an incline, and there is no clutch pedal to mess with. One other problem is the brake and the throttle pedal are so close together, you can only drive with one foot if you are a male or have big feet (I'm both a male and have big feet).

FedEx Ground are owner operators. They bought out RPS several years ago which were owner operators also.

Those Printers are nice...air conditioned unlike Big Brown!
