3 turbos - which one to choose....
im putting a reworked engine back into my 82 from the 84 parts car.
i have 3 turbos which i could bolt onto the engine. one is the 82's with 237k, and some shaft play. the turbo on the donor engine has some shaft play and has 180k on it. and i have one i purchased from a mechanic with 170k thats an 85 and no shaft play detectable. how do i pick which one to bolt on? how do i set the boost with the turbo on the bench - is that possible? thanks, dd

well without any further info, the one with the least miles, and shaft play. If you have a KKK then adjusting the boost in the car is easy, the garrett is not to bad to do either. You would have to cover the intake both sides and introduce compressed air till you reach the pressure you want to set the wastegate at. Might take a little ingenuity to keep it covered and leak proof enough to do a bench test. Use air that is regulated of course. You will still want to check it once in the car.

The one with the least play. Mileage does not mean much if the oil was not maintained or the unit was not well-balanced. The one with the least play is likely to be the best-balanced by this age.
They are all compatible, but might need some orientation adjustments if its from a cali. Before you make any assumptions about shaft play, make sure they are well-oiled and spin them a bit first. Try the wiggle test again. Unfortunately, the only real way to measure the wear is to open it up. |

This is for a 617.952
The '85 I have is not Cali - neither is the turbo on the shelf. I'll take pics and such next time I am near the turbos. I am leaning toward the '85 - no shaft play whatsoever and spins really well. I think its the KKK one. Im not sure though. Thank you for the replies thus far!

I have never seen a KKK on an '85 617. But who knows what is possible. The '85+ all have the ARV thing on the compressor housing.

my 85 617 does have the kkk, I assume it is factory. I have a mind to stick it on my 240 though.

The 85 will spool quicker and put out stock pressure. I would take that one.
