300D Turbo Tranny Options
I love my 300D, (especially now that the a/c is cooooold) but for the fact that the 617 is screaming at 65 mph. Are there any alternative transmissions I could use which have a fourth gear or maybe an overdrive?

Screaming at 65mph in an '84 300D? Do you have a 240D differential in it? You should be about 3,000 rpm @ 75 (3.07 rear) on one with a turbodiesel (Euro non-turbos are lower geared), or at 3,000 rpm @ 80 mph if its an '85 (2.88 rear). And that's not screaming, that's in its sweet spot.

The gear ratio is stanped on the lower left side of the Differential. scrape off the grease and grime off the flat area to the left of the cover. last 3 number will be the ratio. 3:69, 3:46, 3:07 etc....
Your 84 should be 3:07. the other option is the 85 300D and 300SD, the 2:88 Diff was used. If you go that route, then pull the spedo from the donor car. the spedo is geared to the Diff. The spedo from the SD (W126) will not fit into the W123 cluster. different design and is electricaly driven. Most all MB`s are 1:1 in the final drive of the transmission except for the 5-spd manual with the overdrive. this stuff has been talked to death. do a search. Charlie

Are you sure it made it into 4th gear? My '83 300D was quite happy at 65mph. My '76 300D with 3.46:1 gear is kinda busy at that speed, but still not what I would call "screaming".

Maybe screaming is not the right word, but by 70 I can't have much of a conversation with a person in the back seat, even if I turn the radio down.

I can hear the subtleties of the sound my Tires make on the concrete at 70 mph OVER the sound of the engine which is really NOT loud inside the car...And I had just recently made a 3,200 mile round trip in mine to and from North Dakota from the DC area. two days driving each direction. And you could almost hear someone whisper inside my car at those speeds with the windows up and A/C running

What rpm are you turning at 70? The 2.88 rear diff is a nice upgrade. As is the 2.47 if you got the power.

Screaming?
I agree with the above, but my question is:
did you have all the bearings checked? I would check to bearings from bumper to bumper. Also, are you sure that your tranny is going into OD? Before you go looking for a replacement tranny or rebuild, I'd check the rear end, and all the wheel bearings, as well as make sure that the overdrive is kicking in when it's supposed to. First sign of no OD . . . what has your mileage been like?

at 70, I'm somewhere in the 3000 to 3500 range, depending on incline. Does that sound high?

Sounds a tad high at 3K......but 3,500 is definitely too high. Look at the bottom ear that sticks out beyond the differential cover and see what numbers are stamped on it. I'm curious if someone hasn't swapped in a non-turbo center chunk, which I think is a 3.47 ratio. Either that or you have really small diameter tires or a heck of a lot of torque converter slippage.
Have you verified your speedo accuracy with a GPS unit yet like a Garmin or Tom Tom?

Your right with 3.07 and 195 70 r14 tires. 3,500 is a bit high, but if it's a steep incline, that should be near OK. Torque converter maybe slipping a bit much on the incline. .

Why don't we forget about the incline. You know, "what goes up must come down". Inclines are short and at speed the most you will change is 50 to 100 rpm unless the speed changes a lot. And then the poster is very vague about the rpm. About 3000 to 3500 at 70 mph. We should learn to be very precise when talking about speed, rpms, gearing and tires. Could we try harder? Maybe the answer is in a new down pipe, a new muffler or a couple square yards of Dynamat.

Exactly and while any non-lockup converter will slip a bit more under heavy load....I don't see that kind of slippage on a 14% grade. My bet is on a cracked headpipe....at the flex section.

When the temperature gets back to something below the 90s, I will do some inspecting. I don't have a garage or even shade in my driveway, so I'll need a break in this effing weather.
