accelerator pedal could be smoother

Hi everyone,

My accelerator pedal is kinda sticking when put my foot down. I lubed the linkages under the hood with a sillicone spray and tried to get some down the cable. The car hesitates when going up a hill and doesn't feel smooth.
Any suggestions? The car is a 1981 300SD turbo diesel.

Have you checked the throttle mount on the firewall?

Also, putting your car in your signature helps us to better comment on your problem.

I unscrewed the plastic throttle mount and sprayed some sillicone lubricant on the steel cable.

This is what you're looking for. Check the status of that yellow pivot ball.

Has the car been mostly sitting for a while? My 82 was mothballed for a while before I got it and had the same problem at first. The throttle was difficult to push and the cruise control would surge as if the actuator was fighting the sticky linkage as well. I'm not sure what helped the most, but between canning the EGR (extra crap on the linkage), cleaning the engine several times with Simple Green and re-lubing the linkage every time, and just driving it, the problem has slowly gone away - that or I'm used to it, but the cruise cleared up too.

FYI, the manual calls for ATF on the linkages - I ignored it and used some white lithium. YMMV

If the feel of the pedal is smooth but the car doesn't want to go uphill smoothly, there could be other underlying issues.

On the OM617 turbo there is a 10mm nut or bolt that links the rod coming from the firewall to the linkage on the valve cover. Make sure this is tight and positioned correctly.

There is no cable on the throttle linkage that goes back to the accelerator, but there is one that goes to the transmission. The linkages going to the accelerator are mechanical and only require cleaning and re-lubing after some time. Make sure there isn't any rust inside the ball joints either, that would definitely cause the linkage to stick.

Behind the accelerator there is a kickdown switch, if that's what you feel as sticking then it might require cleaning.

If your linkage has gone unlubed for a long time there may be rust on one of the ball-and-socket connections. You might disconnect them one at a time, clean up any rust, and lubricate them.

While you're at it you can try each section separately to try to narrow down the problem.
