My 124 got it's A$$ kicked

Well, I guess it's my turn to cry in my beer about my wrecked 124.

Was headed home from indie's shop after changing out one of the upper strut mounts & changing the oil. Stopped to turn left into a friend of mine's biodiesel shop and...WHAM!!! Rear-ended.

Apparently some guy made a turn out of a driveway behind me & in his rush to beat oncoming traffic he slammed into me. Pushed me off the road, too, as I had my wheels cocked to turn left into my friend's driveway.

As it turned out, the cops said he was drunk, cuffed him, & locked him in the back of the patrol car. The car he was driving was his girlfriend's. Yes, he had a license & insurance, but this will come out of his girlfriend's insurance. Cop told the girlfriend that his being drunk was NOT a good thing for her insurance...

As you can see from the photos, it really looks a mess. Lots of crumpled sheet metal. I don't think the bumper was hit, since the other vehicle was a Nissan Pathfinder (higher bumper). Will be taking it Monday to our one & only body shop for an estimate. I only hope that the insurance co. doesn't try to total it.

What is it with 124's??

Its almost certain they will total it. Buy it back and fix it if you plan on keeping it forever.

It's the drunk part of this that really gets me.

Things are toughening up around here. The legal limit is 0.08. But if you blow 0.05 cops are now impounding the vehicle for 1 week, no questions, no debate, no options. Towed and stowed.

But it's still not enough getting the message across. Cops estimate 1 in 100 vehicles on a Friday between 8pm and 4am here are impared.

Here's what I say: if you're 0.08, it's an immediate go-to-jail. PLUS the fine. PLUS the cops seize the vehicle on the spot and keep it as an article of the crime, FOR GOOD, kiss it goodbye. Goes to auction. Take away the criminal's tools man.

Do you think people would get the message then? Might cause people to think twice before lending their car out to a drunk boyfriend.

Aw, man, don't start talking about totalling it! It's taken me four years to get her where I want her. If they'll let me have it back for a couple hundred dollars I might try to fix it, otherwise she'll have to go. No job, no income other that SS...

I did look on Ebay. There's a couple of '87 300D's on there I could learn to love. I really want to keep the 603 engine, tho.

Not worried about the girl. She should have had better sense than to let her BF drive her car while plastered.

Guess I'll just have to see what happens. Will be going to the body shop Monday for an estimate. Will post results.

No whiplash, I hope? That looks like a pretty good hit. To strengthen your case, maybe go see a chiropractor. Put up a fight. Hope you saved your receipts for any and all repairs. When my '84 got sideswiped, I made a list of everything I'd done to the car. It was a LONG list. I didn't even have to show receipts. It was a city peddle truck that hit it, so maybe commercial insurance policies are a little different, but they didn't total it, and gave me a check for $2800 to have the quarter panel replaced. Don't be afraid to be a [mean guy]. Tell them "NO!" They love it.

Thanks, Jay...

Yeah, I can be an ********* when I need to be. I think I'll have a pretty good case since the BF was driving drunk. It doesn't really look like the damage is that bad, but since it is a unibody the only way I know to fix it is to cut out the bad & weld in the good - other than the trunk lid, lights.

I hate it, too. The car only has 153K on it & runs like a scalded dog. Gets an honest 30 mpg on the highway @ 65-70 mph. Damn...

Yup, and with a branded title it'll be worthless. Except to you. To purchase an equivalent, new, would run ya', what, $65k? The '87's are rare birds. After all, it is YOUR car. Insurance companies are just so used to pushing people around. Totally criminal, if you ask me. The whole thing is a bloody scam. It has to be, right? They have to turn a profit, or else they'd go out of business. How do they turn a profit??? By, one way or another, screwing people over.

Jay.

What difference would that make?
If he were uninsured, her insurance would have to step in.

2-$3,000 worth of damage. I was pulled into a parking space in my 3/4 diesel ram. A Nissan car passed & I saw it clear in my mirrors. I started backing & took her rear taillight on my bumper. The other driver had over shot a parking space & reversed. It was a fixyourown deal.

I reported to my carrier & received a few demand letters from her carrier. Damage to her required 3 panels to be replaced/repaired with a new light assembly.

Cause of accident isn't in question. Her carrier shouldn't give you much grief. The big bucks in accidents come from people damage, not sheet metal. Do your homework. Document what work you've done. Be nice. Be firm. Help the adjuster move this off off their desk. Make sure the offer is sufficient, take a check & be done. Get 1 check only. Sign a waiver releasing the carrier from future liability. You won't be able go back & get reimbursed for a part that was over looked.

Remember: the adjuster doesn't really care & has some discretion. Being educated, & nice moves you up the dollar ladder. Ask (nicely) to talk to the supervisor if person you're dealing with doesn't have enough authority to do what you want. You can always turn to nasty but there is probably no need. Report back results.

Jay.

That's sort of misinformed. My car has a salvage title, and I've been making a point out of parking my salvage and non salvage cars next to each other and having skeptics choose, so far, no one has picked the 87 which has been hit on nearly every side. Also with a stack of service history, and a lot of maintenance "worthless" is a bold claim for a car.

I've seen salvage cars in better shape with straighter panels than one owner clear title cars. That said, I've seen salvage title cars literally held together with wood screws and tape, and cars with a dozen owners that looked like they'd be built yesterday. Value cars on a case to case basis, in person.

Worth less, probably, worthless, if it wasn't a worthless piece of **** to start with, probably not.

If you don't carry collision insurance and get hit....and fix it out of pocket. No salvage title...
