1987 300 SDL Oil Leak

My 300 SDL is leaking oil and it looks like the motor support bracket on the drivers side that bolts to the motor has oil coming out and running down. Has anyone had this type of leak before and does anyone have a diagram or a picture so I can help determine where the leak is? Thanks for your help. Jack

Oil leak

Mine has the exact same problem. I think it is coming from the vacuum pump gasket. You need to check and see if yours has been replaced. This thread describes everything you need to know:

How to replace a 603 vacuum pump.

My vacuum pump the the rivets on the face, so I think mine has been replaced, but I'm going to get the "dam style" gasket and replace it. Hopefully this will cure the oil leak. Look at the pictures in the thread of an old vs. new vacuum pump. Yours is an 87, so you have to determine if you need the "dam style" gasket or not. Google "603 vacuum pump" and read everything you can find.

Or your IP is leaking motor oil out the side gasket, or its front large o-ring gasket, drips down onto there.

That lower IP gasket would be a bear to change. Has anyone pulled the injection pump on one of these lately?

Has everyone with an 87 replaced the Vac Pump? I just checked, and mine is old style with 308k miles. Reading the 2004/2007 threads shows many swapped them... and we all should... but how many of us haven't? From the 2011 vantage, is this an issue related to early 124 euroMBs? Or should it be at the top of the list? Has anyone on the forum reported an engine failure due to this?

I have, but mine was leaking. It's cheap insurance. Will come with a fresh Gasket so it's one less place for oil to Leak from. I've done front crank, Vac pump and some of the IP Gasketing. So far I dont leak anymore oil.

I got that leak from a bad o-ring between the IP and block. Goes bad if you adjust IP timing after years and miles of not touching it.

johnscars, yes. If you're ever in San Jose, I can show you a ruined 603. The oil pump sucked a vacuum pump bearing from a prior failure. #3 rod spun a bearing.
