How much is my Merc worth
I'm moving abroad and I have to sell the last of my Mercedes. I'm trully sorry to see it go, since it took my a while to find it.
It's an 86 Mercedes Benz 190D 5 speed Euro. It's a Florida car(now in NY) and it has never seen snow. It's gray, but the paint is faded and it had a small hit n the rear left. It has a black average interior, one of the windows doesn't work and the speedo doesn't work either, but it has something around 250K miles on it. All new filters, battery and synthetic oil(motor/trans/diff). A/C doesn't seem to be working either. I got 41 mpg highway doing 110mph for about an hour. Straight as an arrow and smooth as silk.. A thousand times better than my W123 or my W116. I bought it for 2K about 2 years ago... How much should I expect to get for it now???? |

If you put any more BS in your notice then that, no one will believe you. First of all there is no place you can drive 110 for an hour, second you can't get 31 mpg out of that engine and 5 speed at 55 mph. Tell us only the truth, we are all Mercedes owners.

Here, no AC is a dealbreaker. I have seen similar cars listed here for $1500-2k. Don't know what they sold for. I assume when you say no AC you mean never had it, not installed but not working?

You made a Typo.....he claimed 41, not 31. And yeah...I'd like to see where you could drive that fast for an hour and NOT encounter a cop. Even in rural North Dakota I never got that far at the posted limit without seeing a cop. I just drove from DC or North Dakota and back over the 4th of July period in my W123 and averaged 31 mpg for the trip at the posted limits of up to 75 mph and a little more.

He DOES have a euro, maybe he meant 110 km/h?
Not sure how you calculate mpg from an hour drive tho.....

I drove it from NYC to Houston last summer and the A/C decided to quit, so it is equipped with one.
I drove for about an hour flooring it on fifth gear somewhere in Georgia or Alabama around midnight.. No BS. Yes, big typo.. I meant 31 mpg doing over 100mph. I usually get 37-38mph doing about 80mph. I just want to have an idea of what a rustless euro stick 2.5 190 should go for in the Northeast. It does have a few things that need to be addressed, but it looks like the PO took fairly good care of it. |

A W201 with an OM602 and a 5 speed transmission at 55 MPH would get about 40-42 MPG. Based on my direct experiences his claims are not at all outlandish. Well maybe being able to average 110 MPH for over an hour but the fuel mileage claims are plausible.

__________________ Iam not going to say you are wrong about the milage claim. I just find it hard to believe 31 mpg at that speed, and with an automatic. I didn`t see 31 - 32 until I swapped the 4-Speed for the auto in the 85 300D. usually only saw 26 - 28 on the hwy as I remember, and that was staying under 70. As far as that 190D, your best bet is to advertise it on e-bay. you will get your best price. Charlie

In the mountains and daily stop and go (50/50 highway city) where most of my driving is...I average 26 mpg. And its maintained that for the last 60,000 miles and 7 years I've owned this car. It is mechanically very strong....and starts in seconds on a single 15 second glow cycle as low as 0F (hasn't been colder here). 31mpg average is open highway exclusively. I have had a single day trip where I topped that based on an 18 gallon fill up when I got 34 a few years back with winter fuel, never repeated that however. I will add, I change my oil every 3,000 miles religiously and use dino oil. My car hit 200,000 miles outside Cleveland , OH on the return trip. It does have full synthetic in the transmission and the rear end. 225-60/15 tires, and a 2.88 rear end I put in it a few years back. EGR deleted and manifolsd and head ports cleaned out as well...years ago. Boost adjusted up to 14.5 psi and alda adjusted to barely visible smoke on full acceleration from a stop. Its a great running car. Not just a good running car. I wish it looked as good as it runs. Everyone might not get that....but I do. I don't expect that to be the average for everyone. Too many variables, different tires...engine condition, driving styles, and different roads. Whats reasonable or expected on a 190D I can't comment on. I've never owned or driven one but they are more aerodynamic and do get better mpgs than a W123. How much I'm not certain. As you said...eBay is a very good indicator of what comparable cars are actually selling for. Good enough to use in the case of an insurance claim.

I owned a 240d manual and a 300sd before the 190d. The 190d is smoother, faster, quitter, gets better milage and better handling. Plus you can get all the goodies from the gas sporty oriented 190's.
I'm really sad to see it go, but I won't be back to the states for a while. |
