New to me 1984 300CD

So many of you have read about my saga and rant about the 1982 300D that I went to NC to purchase and was bummed. So get this story:

My grandmother recently passed away and her 1998 S500 has seen little use in the past 3 years. I have a local indy less than a mile from my house here in Houston who has serviced all our diesels. My mom has been bugging me to take my grandmothers car over to him for service for the better part of 6 months so we can get rid of it. ( If you are interested in a 98 S500 with 80,000 miles PM me) .

So yesterday I take it over there and Ronnie my indy asks me how the diesels are doing and I told him the story of my trip to NC ect ect. He takes me to the back of his shop where he has a Midnight Blue 84 300CD that he has been servicing for 10 years for a man. The car belonged to his wife who has been sick for the past few years and recently passed. He made an offer and was able to purchase the car and it had just been towed into his shop that day. ( It has been sitting in a garage for 2 years).

Here is the run down : 120,XXX miles ( odo works) 1984 Midnight Blue with Tan Leather interior ( original sticker has this listed as a $1,100 option). All service records/ books stamped and a file thick with maintenance receipts. The current owners had purchased it in Houston at the same dealership where my parents purchased their diesels new (Intercontinental Mercedes which is now Mercedes Benz of Houston North) It even has the original pin striping done by the same man who did my parents (Milburn).

The car has been kept indoors , the paint needs to be buffed and the front passenger side fender may need a touch up depending on how it turns out after it is buffed. Leather interior is in mint condition , no cracks no holes , even the back seat is soft and the top deck is in great shape ( non-tinted windows ). The rubber seals around the windows are in great shape. The wheels look like brand new and have new Michelin tires all around including spare. It runs great and he is going to perform a full service. The A/C blows cold and is R12 , the push button unit needs to be replaced as it is blowing in default mode and wont even turn off via the buttons ( they are all stuck). Dash is perfect and so is the wood. All windows work as well as the sunroof. Original Becker.

Antenna does not work , locks are not working , front headlight door is cracked. I looked it over for about 45 min and that’s all I could find wrong with it. Today he is having the dents removed and the car buffed so I will know in greater detail what kind of paintwork if any is needed.

He offered me the car and I took it on the spot. I am very excited. Its funny how I traveled across the country only to go down the block to find the one I have really been looking for. I will keep everyone updated . I am going to have him update the car ( service and small issues fixed ) and keep everyone posted. I took one picture with my phone that I have posted. Mind you the car has been in the garage for 3 years . Looking forward to posting pictures when it is cleaned up.

Boy, it looks like a lucky day for you. Good to listen to Mom sometimes! It really looks like a super car and that is great!

Glad things are looking up for you. Good thing you turned the other car down.

The antenna should be pretty easy, but depends on failure mode: electrical is probably dirty contacts, mechanical is probably the nylon cord.

Check my vacuum thread for the coupe to assist with the locks. The coupe also has vacuum seatback latches, so if malfunctioning they may be contributing to the lock problem.

Looks like a nice ride.

Dropped into the see the progress yesterday.

Both front seats had been Re-Dyed and turned out great ( I did not know he was doing this). Replaced the antenna , Replaced the Push button unit with a new remanufactured one ( $150) and the A/C blew correctly out of the center vents and none to the defrost. I picked up the records and the pods in the dash had been replaced in 05.

He fixed the vaccum locks ( the gas tank element was leaking )

New air cleaner mounts , oil service/ fuel filters

He was going to make sure the freon level was correct, oiled the sunroof, clean up the wheels and the interior. He had the paint buffed and the front passenger side fender and rear quarter panel will need some attention. I will have this taken care of over the next few weeks when I get estimates from my body guy. I drove it yesterday and it has great power and the front end has been rebuilt within the past few years and it drives better then most the 300D's Ive driven. He put it on the lift and everything checked out. I spent about an hour last night going through the records.

Overall the car turned out great and I am excited to pick it up later. I will post pictures as soon as I get it.

Wow that looks nice.

Reminds me of my first 300sd. For a year I answered ads and shopped out of town on weekends (not many cars turn up around here).

The net was lots of rose-glasses-descriptions, lots of rust, lots of frustration.

Then an ex-California w116 dropped in my lap, 30 minutes from home.

Congratulations!
