You'd probably get more truck for your $ getting an old toyota.

This.

The late 80s to early 90's trucks are everywhere and with the little 22re motor you can get upper 20's mpg wise even on the 4x4.

The main challenge today is finding one that has been taken care of. VWs have always been something of an entry-level car/truck/van and often are purchased by folks who either can't afford maintenance or don't realize it's necessary. Somewhat the same argument might be made for the Toyota but there are many more to choose from.

^2x. Why do you think Passats had a bunch of oil sluding problems, but 1.8T Audi A4s and A6s did not? People put the right oils in the Audis... but the nearly identical Passats got taken to Jiffy Lube every now and again.
