vacuum under dash
 

What is the vacuum control valve called that is under the dash by the glove box? It is in a 1984 190D 2.2, I have two vacuum lines that are not holding vacuum. The two lines are #9, the green and blue stripe line, #10 the green and yellow stripe line. Does anyone know what these 2 lines go to?

Looks like Fastlane calls them vacumm elements.

That valve controls the various pods that open and close doors in the climate control system to make air go various places. Lines that won't hold a vacuum mean that the pod has a leaky or broken diaphragm. Some can be rebuilt, others have to be replaced. Some are easy to get at, others require pulling the dash, a PITA. I do not have any technical information on 201 cars so I can't tell you specifically what pods are controlled by those two lines. My 124 is similar (and based upon many things first introduced in your 201) but different.

Possibly. Try removing the two leaking hoses from the valve and capping the two outlets. Use duct tape if you have nothing else -- anything to shut off the flow of air that's killing your vacuum.

I will try that tomorrow, that vacuum element is a pain in the a$$ to get to.

The ACC supply line should have a check valve by the firewall so a leak doesn't mess with other consumers.

So you are saying that even if I have a leak in those 2 lines it should not effect the way my tranny is shifting?

That's how it is designed but, of course, it may not be operating correctly.

You need a mity-vac (or the cheaper Harbor Freight knock-off), the vacuum diagram for your car, to read a few threads and ask a few questions.

We've ALL had to do the same thing.

Follow the lines to the engine vacuum pump distribution tree. Cap the lines that don't go the VCV. If the transmission shifts better, there are significant leaks elsewhere.

That next one was out of EPC. Actually they are all helpful, the locations of some of the switchover valves is just a bit different but it provides the general picture.

The vacuum lines beyond those shown on EPC are really quite simple on the 122 and 601 engine (I have one.) I too had two leaks but mine were at the connectors at the switchover valve to the outside of the glovebox. I too hard hard shifting but in addition to those two leaks there were others. The main problem I had with hard shifting was the modulator on the tranny. When I changed that, and fixed the other 5 or 6 leaks in the vacuum system, all is GOOD.

The check valve referred to is right next to the electrical center, under the hood. Mine was fine. The modulator leak was the source of my hard shifting in addition to a switchover valve on the passenger side of the engine compartment right opposite the battery.

I was rafting on the American River yesterday. A gift from my friend for my birthday. It's been a wonderful weekend.

As you rafted out of the canyon about a mile above Coloma and the mill site, the last hill on your left has my house sitting over the river about 1000' up. You should have waved!
