3/2 Valves - how do they work

I suspect that the (2) 3/2 valves on my 82 240D may be leaking. How fast should these bleed down and what is the characteristics of leaking valves and how do they control shifting ?

(edit: For the HVAC) They shouldn't really leak at all. If you can find a similar-vintage car at the scrapper's, just grab the whole row of valves, easy if someone's already pulled the stereo and/or CC unit--which is likely. Find the good valves from each set and make one good set.

I'm not sure what you mean by "control shifting." Of the transmission, or the HVAC flaps? If it's the transmission, the only "control" the CC has is to make it shift too hard with too many system leaks.

It's part of the egr system, many have simply bypassed it.
