Need info on shipping a car from NC to CT ???
 

I am looking at a car in North Carolina and if I decide to purchase the car I want to ship it up to connecticut...Anyboby know a relieable shipping company at a good price??? 98 turbo diesel

First decide what you plan to pay, business class or tourist class.

Nearly all of the companies you will find advertising in the price-competitive market are brokers. They take a cut, then put the run up onto dispatch board for independents or companies to grab. Most of these run open transporters, some do have premium services on offer.

Right now things are not great in that industry.

Have a look at http://www.transportreviews.com/ but don't take what you see there as gospel.

I have found that they are all sweetness and light when you first call. Once you pay and the job is dispatched, you may find the tone changes. You may wonder who is paying whom.

If the car is valuable, or you wish to be assured first class service, then look for one of the companies that deals directly with owners and transports rare/restored cars on covered transporters. However they will be at least 2x more then open.

Why wouldn't you just go and retrieve it?

Sorry I was negative but my last two experiences with transporters (I have done this five times, cross-continent) were awful.

If you have a company locally that does this sort of thing, call them. If you aren't sure where to start, call a local towing company or an auto restorer and ask for a referral. (Occasionally towing companies do these sorts of runs, but they are usually very expensive unless by huge coincidence they can find a car going the other way, to make it a paying round trip.)

As Jetmugg says, if you can get temp tags and your insurer will cover you, just fly in and drive it home.

+1. NC to CT is not far and is not risky because there is life along the whole route... and some decent shops. Id drive it.

What everyone else is saying. What part of NC is the car in? If it's fairly close to I-77, then take that route back coming back into CT off of I84. It's a gorgeous scenic ride through the mountains at the top of NC and into VA. Plus, no I-95 headachas AT ALL!

I have traveled this route many a time. Every time I take this path, I loathe I-95 more and more.
