I plan on towing a 97 lb canoe on a 200 lb trailer I custom made using a Harbor Freight trailer kit. I have already installed a CURT hitch which, was quite easy to do. Does anyone know which, is the most reliable 'power converter' to use for wiring the vehicle to the trailer. I have looked at the HOPKINS 46365, 46255 and CURT 59146 but unsure which is better. Are there any options and are any of the above reliable??

I'd be interested to know this too. I just bought a Curt hitch for the '98 but it looks like a pain to install...

Evan, based on some of your previous threads, posts installing the hitch will be a breeze for you. Just follow the instructions either provided in the box with the hitch or download them from the CURT website and you will see. Taking the bumper off of my 97 was a breeze 3 screws just like they said in the instructions. The drilling was also easy. IF you need help let me know. I believe the FUN is going to be the wiring.

Will the lamp outage detection suffer from the increased current load of the trailer lamps?

Pardon me --but what the heck are ya'll talking about-converters??? An old 300td just has a harness that plugs into the taillight harness/sandwich into the plugs and has the trailer outlet between them.

Converters are needed when you have one brake/turn signal lamp on each side of the trailer, but separate stop and turn signal lamps in the car.

so the 300td also has them??

The TD has separate turn and brake lamps. Some trailers do too.
