A/C r134a to r12 basics

Okay, I've been pouring through the archives pages and I've done quite a bit of reading from other online sources. What I need is a simple checklist/set of instructions on how to proceed.

My car was switched to r134a by a previous owner. It has always been a bit asthmatic in it's ability to cool. I have several pounds of R12 plus mineral oil to go into the system. I also scored an R12 recovery and recycling machine for $50 that came with a quarter full tank of R12. I also intend to remove the evaporator and clean the fins sometime in the near future when I replace my cracked dash.

I just had the remaining R134a evacuated at a local shop yesterday. Last summer I know the system was full and operated well, yesterday the tech pulled out only .4 lb of r134a. I knew there was a leak, but I haven't used the A/C this summer and it produced cool air at the vents yesterday morning(I lost my thermometer otherwise I'd tell you how cold).

So what's my checklist? Do I pull the compressor? New drier? What o-rings need to be replaced?

And I know I need to pressure test the system, but is Nitrogen all I can use? Can I use another inert gas like Argon (which I have on hand)?

yes. any dry gas can be used.
CO2, Argon, N2, etc even helium, but it's hard to get any volume of that to flush with.
new compressor is best, along with new TXV and fresh lines.
but flushing them is OK.
did you read through my a/c recommendation sticky?

If you follow VStech's advice, you will end up with a screaming a/c system. He's forgotten more about auto a/c systems that most of us know.

What the heck is the TXV? Is that the expansion valve?

Yes, but I'm still left with the specifics of what/where do I get it/how do I put it in.

I've figured out how to get a new compressor, but as for the expansion valve and drier are these dealer only? Aftermarket? Part numbers?

Where do you get the seals? Are there approved/non-approved sources?

EDIT: I just found that I had a DIY for the expansion valve bookmarked in the wrong folder.

You should not have to go to the dealer for any a/c parts. Do a Google search & see what pops up. There are MANY suppliers for these parts, including the sponsors of this forum...
