So now scroll down to engine cooling. Click on it and there are three pages. Click on page 2, (in blue) and you will see the thermostat labeled #149. The thermostat usually sits in a little igloo shaped dome close to and behind the water pump. The water pump is the thing that usually has the hub of the fan coming out of the center, and that hub goes in the water pump and drives the water pump.

Thanks Jim, so it's on the passenger side of the engine? I hope it's reasonably accessible. The diagrams seem to show two different shaped assemblies containing a thermostat. Anyway, as long as I know where to look I'm sure I can find it. Getting a wrench to it and being able to turn that wrench is something else.

I don't see how that is possible. In fact, the opposite hypthesis is more likely. If plug 1 is not working and plugs 2-5 work, then plug 1 is not in the series. How can it be allowing current through the plug but not be getting hot? If the first plug in a series fails, the rest cannot operate. Are you sure the wire from the firewall and the wire to plug #2 are not touching each other?

Be very careful with the thermostat housing bolts. Use lots of penetrating oil. Those bolts are notorious for snapping off.

Well I am sitting here watching the cubs, but I have mine up in the air on jack stands, (if flies but doesn't leave the ground) and take a quick look. Yes, yes pass side front top, lower hose is connected to it. Take off hose and 3 or 4 screw studs and you will have it in your hand. Take the hose off first I would recommend cause if the hose has been on a long time they can be difficult. Better plan on replacing the hose also.

Kerry, nothing is touching. Strange I know.

Thanks Jim, I have a sneaking suspicious that is my problem. Once I take it off, however, will I lose a lot of coolant and will I have to put the car on a tilt to get the air out?
