W123 4 speed differences

Got my spare 4 speed for my 240D to swap in. The only difference is one shift lever is upside down compared to mine.

See the bottom arm. Can they be removed and flipped or will that not work? I couldn't find the shifter rods.

I was trying to keep up with you...when did you decide to swap?

Is the old one an iron case job? The shifter arms should all be the same way on all the alloy ones and all the iron ones (respectively)

I have an '82 which is and should be the aluminum box. This thing is not iron, I lifted it on my own without an issue.

decided to swap when Pierre said my 1st gear is shot. Well, the synchro is shot I cannot get it into gear at all.

my cars data card in EPC says my transmission is : 716210 00 176942

The reverse lever should point up on the later alloy units. This tranny looks correct.

So I have an early allow version since the lever points down? Is there any way to make my shift rods work for this transmission?

I need to get a brass brush so I can clean it and the engine. Also, how many quarts of fluid should I get for it? Going to get some Penzoil Synchromesh.

Can shift rods be ordered individually from MB? If so, can you compare the part numbers on the rods that you currently have vs. the rods that would have been used for that particular transmission and see if all the rods are different, or just the rod that attaches to that lever?

Don, the reverse is pointed up on the pictures you show. Which is correct for a later year 240d 4spd. Where did you get the shift rods from?

I havent gotten the shift rods. I could not find them. Only shift rods I have are the rods currently on my car.

and yes, I know the reverse lever is pointed up. On my installed transmission its pointed down. I wanted to know if anyone here knows if the lever can be flipped the opposite directions.

Nevermind. My transmission levers are oriented the same. So it's a direct swap. Just has a brain fart

Completely understandable.

When I took our 240d out for it's maiden drive around the farm this past weekend, it kept stalling in first... Crap, was the new clutch still not bled all the way? WTH! When I finally got it to move, I realized that the gearing was way too high -- I was in third, not first. I had crossed the rods. 2 minutes under the car and we have a perfectly shifting, smooth as butter 240d.

I almost liked driving that car more than my wagon. I guess this just means I'm going to have to drop a manual in the wagon.... My left foot has been too bored for too long.

I need to get fluid. How much does it take? I'm going with penzoil synchromesh. That and cleaning the
Exterior.

I've never changed the MT fluid, but I think ATF is recommended by MB for these. M1 synthetic ATF would be a good choice.

I've had great results with this in my various VW / Audis. Let us know how it works out in the MB box.
