Correct thermostat for E300D OM606.910?
 
Hi,

I replaced the thermostat in my E300D today as my car was running cold (about 60C). It was clearly broken when I had a close look at it. It is now running between the 80 and 100 mark at about 90C.

Question is: Did the parts supplier supply me the right one? It is a Behr with Art no. 213685100 on the box. On the suppliers stick-on-label reads W124 300D(om603) 14G6.

I have an E300 OM606 not 300D OM603.

Does anyone know if these are interchangable/universal?

Same engine, different cylinder head and pistons.

Running temp of 90C is a bit higher than it used to run at, before the[old] thermostat gave up completely. It was running just above the 80C mark (85ish) but maybe the [old] thermostat has been slowly failing for some time.

Can anyone else chime in and tell me their operating temps when driving with/without the A/C on?

There are two thermostats for the OM606: An 85C for the NA cars and the 80C for the turbos. An indication of around 90C on the gauge seems to be correct.

With the 80C on my car, the gauge registered a shade above the 80 line most of the time.

Kartek, Do you know if there is any way to tell (from the numbers stamped on the thermostat) which one is 80 and which one is 85? Also did you get that info from an electronic parts catalogue? I wouldn't mind having a reference so I can show to my parts supplier.

I'm wondering if the original one from my car was an 80C - possibly a mistake by a previous owners mechanic. I still have my old thermostat and maybe I can verify which one I have.

The correct stat for this engine is 85C - even the MB part has the temperature stamped on the bypass plate. But MB also have 80C and even lower temperature stats that can be installed in this engine.

Im currently running a 85C BEHR item and the temp needle stays put at 90 on the run and on 95 or 100 at a red light or traffic jam. The original MB one made the car stick to 100 degrees all the time - bad, Im currently looking for a Wahler 80C thermostat - Texas weather is hot enough already.

I don't know what's stamped on your thermostat, but the MB part number is:

601 200 00 15

It's a little strange to use because they use odd part type catagorization but you'll get used to it.

Would you by any chance know the part number for the 80deg thermostat that is used in the turbo versions?
Or if anyone else has a way to look it up?

The one you gave me is the correct part for my car but I was hoping to get a part number for the OM606 turbo running at 80deg. Main dealer won't look it up without a VIN for the turbo version.

Sorry for the confusion, 602 200 00 15 is the correct T-stat for the OM606.962 Turbo, 80C.

Thanks Kartek, thats exactly what I needed.

I wonder why MB engineers designed the turbo 606.962's to run at 80C but the NA 606.910 to run at 85C?

Does anyone know?

most probably to keep the engine temperature in control - the additional fuel and air do create some extra heat.
