Ladies, argue about it elsewhere. This is not the thread to do it.

Agreed.

I got the garage all cleaned out today and there is ample space for my 190 plus engine swap space. After driving Norm around with the AC on for the last day I really want to do this swap ASAP!

I need to locate a hoist to borrow, and Joe is going to let me use his stand. Does anyone know what size bolts are required to bolt it to a stand?

I'm going to go hunting for an engine next Monday, though I might see if ashedd will send me his. Fingers crossed.

Since when did you become a moderator little boy?

If you don't want a topic being discussed, don't post a thread about it.

While I agree with you that theres no consensus that the 4-speed to turbo combination is harder to drive, I think everyone who's done it loves it, and its very easy to get used to, this promises to be a very interesting thread as he continues through the swap, so is it possible not to get into the usual pointless argument on page 2 with your usual charm? Its pretty clear this is what TheDon is trying to prevent as well. Let it go for once.

To the OP, I had the 617 mated to the 4-speed, and later I swapped in a lower mileage 2.88, which added to the taller tires I was running, created a 8-10 mph discrepancy in top speed. Off the line, it still felt pretty good, was no speed demon, but compared to a NA, was a blast to drive. The 2.88 worked out pretty well for the highway

Correct. Everyone that argues against it doesn't own one, has likely never driven one and has likely never even driven any turbodiesel with a manual.

I currently have a 3.07 in my 240 and I'm happy with it.
A 2.88 is a little too tall to use with the 240D flywheel, if you can get a genuine 300D flywheel it would be an "okay" match.

Based on my M129/M130 tranny R&R jobs, I think you'll need some M12 bolts (17mm head).

And I've had a manual turbo for the last 6 years too.

Just a quick update on this project as it is still moving right along.

I have almost all the parts necessary to do the swap, just need a few small bits and to go pick up the engine itself. That should be done in August sometime, and hopefully the swap will be complete by September.

I need to get a 240D trans crossmember, driveshaft, and various bushings but otherwise I have a complete 4 speed swap sitting in my garage.

Pretty excited about this, Norm will be a new machine pretty soon!

Also I want to put a 2.88 in the rear end, I just need to locate one!

Well then, get excited and get it into Norm, that is the 617 Turbo. I really love mine and after driving my 85 about 5 years with the automatic, I really feel the same way, why didn't they sell this set up. I think Mercedes felt it was just a little rough on the edge for the new Mercedes buyer in the 80's. There thinking these are sedans, luxury sedans and a few coupes and in the US everybody is driving automatics. So they were looking at it from a completely different perspective then we are looking at it. Fuel was pretty cheap in the 80's and the diesels were already at the top of the mileage makers pile. They weren't going to screw that up with a 4 speed transmission - well except for the guy who wanted their lowest cost car, a 240D. And that's the way it went, 100 percent automatics except maybe 10 to 20 percent of manual transmissions in the 240D. But I will say, I really love mine!

That cross member can be found under any 240D automatic, just at the back of the transmission. The drive line has to be modified - well maybe not if you are just changing the transmission. Anyway, to lengthen or shorten the front shaft by any amount is a quick and easy job for any driveline shop.

I'll be hitting the junkyard this week. There is a 240D there, I believe....

Why I didn't grab it from the 240D I got you the rest of the swap stuff... no idea.

The driveshaft is probably still there.

Well the driveshaft from a 240D will not work, at least not without taking 4" out of it. What you really need out of that donor car is the whole shifter assembly. There are a lot of parts under that lever and it unscrews from the underside of the floor pan with 4 screws. Get it all and save yourself a big problem. The cross member from the 240 4 speed will not work - it has to be from a 240 automatic. It sounds like that would be wrong, but it isn't.
