intermittant rough downshift

'82 300sd, 230 000 km, when rolling in traffic, say up to a light and it turns green, trans shifts down (3-2, or 2-1, have not figured ouit which yet) it sometimes shifts really rough, somewhat hard, feels really bad. May have actually heard a grind once, like hitting the starter when alreaddy running. Only does this sometimes. Shifts great most of the time. Upshifts are perfect. only when under low power and going slow. I checked the trans oil level, really high, going to drain some out. Color is great. Recently serviced, synthetic was used (previous owner just had it done) Hope I'm not looking at a rebuild. I have a superior kit I picked up, is this something it would address?

It doesn't matter if you know what you're doing, as long as you look like you know what you're doing.

You might have a vacuum problem. With insufficient vacuum you'll feel the lurch of upshifts as you slow to a stop.

so possibly - low rpm = low vaccuum = hard downshifts after coasting to a near stop?

The trans could use a touch softer upshift, perhapse may help solften the downshift. Which direction to increase vaccum?

I had read at some point that thered is a plastic part for the vacuum modulator that brakes and can cause problems?? May have been for a different trans.

Usually it's a leak elsewhere in the vacuum system. Try turning off the climate control (push in far right button) and see if the problem goes away. If it does, you have a vacuum leak int he climate control system somewhere.
