W114 Coupe to Diesel?

Just saw the most amazing 76 280 C today, unfortunately, it is being sold due to Cali emissions and the owner just wants out. Given the AMAZING condition naturally I thought a OM615/616 looked like a great option. Since I can convert from Gas to Diesel, under very specific circumstances here in Cali, can anyone opine on the swap? Turbo power would be the best, I know the W116 Turbo D doesn't have the oil filter location problem mentioned in the past. Even an n/a 5 cylinder would be great. Manual, of course...4 or 5... So, is the wheelbase and Engine mounts/firewall clearance/ driveshaft center support length issues gonna be a problem? Seems that a W114/115 gas to diesel swap is the closet thing to a bolt-on there is. Fire away! I just cannot seem to think this car may get crushed or something, but I need a somewhat simple solution..... BTW Isaw a 240D into a W114 Coupe a few years back, no details on HOW...

There was a w114 230c on CL recently that someone stuck a 240 motor into. Left it a stick shift.

I love the idea of putting a diesel into a W114 coupe. If you could find a 75-76 300D drivetrain that would be a direct swap. You would have to loop the fuel system but everything else would bolt in, including A/C if the car was equipped with it.

You can put a turbo OM617.95x in there but you would likely need a higher 85 style manifold I believe and the oil filter would need to be relocated BUT the oil plate is available and can be used to avoid the filter hitting the brake booster.

If you can go for it.

Excellent...

I missed the one on CL here, may just check it out to see how it was done. Searched a bit today and saw an UK conversion that had a OM602 and 5 speed swapped in, now THATS the ticket! The car I saw today was SPOTLESS! Inside and out, just needs something under the hood other than he M110 with shot TA's and a TON of smaller issues. A 75 or later OM615/6/7 with a manual is the way to go, I think. I have been looking for the Euro 5 speed that went in some non-USA W114 coupes, anyone know the tranny number off hand? Thanks for the input, as usual!

what a well timed thread. I am giving a 280C to a friend and suggested he put his spare 300TD turbo diesel motor into it.

So I also need to find in an intake manifold and a filter relocation plate?

I presume some re-plumbing of vacuum and ignition would mean it would help to have a W115 sourced diesel starting switch too, right?

Thx -CTH

The plate can be obtained by the guy in this thread. http://www.superturbodiesel.com/std/Thread-FS-Custom-Billet-oil-filter-relocation-plates

The intake manifolds are out there.

I am not sure about the clearance of the exhaust manifold and the turbo hitting the frame rail since the car is narrower than the W123.

The 75-76 300D ignition would work with the diesel motor unless the M110 shuts off via vacuum as well.

M110 does not shut off by vac.

After my lovely daughter number three filled my nearly pristine seventy four two forty d with gasoline then tried to drive the four hour trip home, frying the engine, I bought a rough cosmetically but excellent mechanically seventy six three hundred d and swapped over everything diesel. It made a very nice car.

I paid six hundred bucks to Jim Schrager of south bend the SCM magazine Porsche expert for it. Had a very nice conversation with him too.

The coupe wheelbase and floorpan is the same as the sedan. Forward of the A pillar, they have the same sheetmetal.

A 250C already has the return fuel line plumbed, not sure about the carbed 280C....

Find a diesel sedan and everything would swap over as a bolt on operation.

The W115 300D model had a key start vice the older gorilla knob, if you want to avoid drilling your dash.

Still looking at this..

The car is still available but stuck in probate. A bunch of 250/280C's are here in the Bay Area, just seems to good a conversion to not have more floating around. Simple engine, drivetrain, A/C, etc. I am not very familiar with the A/C system, can anyone give me the Cliff Notes version? Assuming a piston type A/C Compressor, anyone ever do a Nippondenso-type conversion to R134? Anyone else have input? Thanks....
