That car probably did not have a #22 head. IIRC 90/91 cars had #18 heads from the factory.

My 1998 production motor has a #22.

That auction looks like a good deal. Ya more $ up front, but buying a donor car doesn't give you a 100% guarantee on the parts ;) Plus then you have the dead car to deal with.

Thats a weld. Looks like a decent job, I don't think it would hurt anything.

vstech 08-22-2011 01:53 PM

the weld looks good, but the head also looks to have had it's injectors milled to accept the straight early PC's...

jonbobshinigin 08-22-2011 02:41 PM

Great buy...I wish I had a 22 head for when mine inevitably goes out on me. I have had a few scares and a few moderate overheats, but she is still holding up!

The boring for the angled injectors on my car goes into the part number just like the eBay head.

Yes after I missed out on Zeitgeists #22 a year ago and having not seen anything but #17's at best I figured this was as good as it was going to get. The #17's were going for 6-800 without cam or valves. I found a #17 for $300. It lots of cracks all over the place.

It comes with the early style injectors (talked him into it), I was not looking forward to finding oblique injector lines.

The 30 day guarantee, 100% feedback and several other things sealed the deal for me.

Now I just need a new timing chain, 606 headgasket and a few other odds and ends.

I SEE 5 TO 6 603 DIESEL CARS THRU THE YEAR AT THE YARDS ,WHAT MAKES THE#22 HEAD DESIRABLE Winmutt?

sixto 08-22-2011 06:02 PM

If I may, #22 represents the latest cylinder head casting for the turbo 603. Improved metallurgy to resist overheating damage, and improved oil journals to resist head gasket failure. That's what I've heard and read though not from official MB sources.

#22 IIRC was the last and stongest head casting for the 603.

X3 on that weld.

I'm gonna keep rocking the 14 head... why not right?

Perhaps I will devise a way to run it even cooler.

Nothing wrong with 14's some are prone to cracking dosnt mean they all do, why fix it when it's not broke :)

If mine didnt come with the death clack I would keep doing the same as well. Mine may just need a head gasket, in which case I can sell the old head and recoupe some of my losses.

Sixto, with some 8 different revisions clearly there were lots of changes. Tom @ ClassicParts said that they rerouted some of the coolant passages in some cases and in others made the walls thicker.
