85 300SD Transmission kicks down.

Yesterday I tried to bring home the 85 300SD I'm parting out. The Tranny does not have reverse, you can hear it whine like it trying but no go. Got the car up to about 45 and she wants to kick back down into 1st gear. don't want to chance hurting the good engine in it. I looked at the bowden cable, disconnected the kickdown switch. Only other option I see it having it brought home on a trailer.

Is there anyway to force the transmission into 3-4 ?

Did you try manually shifting it thru the gears? Did you check the fluid level?

Ya, everything full. I just think the trans is dead. Going to put it on a trailer.
