At least, the oil pan is off to replace it due to a crack. I thought I'd report, I've never seen a cleaner engine crankcase, it is pristine as far as any dirt or deposit is concerned. The guys at the shop were impressed too as it has 108000 miles. I would enjoy understanding more about the oil pump plumbing: there is a round screen-like appendage at the front, as expected, but the pump is longer front-to-back, than a gas-engine pump. There is a steel pipe which is attached to the rear of the pump and turns down into the sump with no screen on the end. The tech noticed this pipe had a piece of green O-ring at the connection to the pump. It had to have been like this for a while, possibly since new. We are replacing the o-ring, of course.
All but #6 cylinder bore appear very nice; #6 has 2 or 3 scuff streaks on the visible lower third or fourth. I wonder if someone got on it when cold, or? It doesn't use oil or have any symptoms, so at this stage I'm not worried about it until there are issues.
Car was dealer-maintained for the most part by the previous-original owner, so I assume the synthetic Mobil 1 or Valvoline (which the dealer who sold it to me uses) was doing its job.

Do you see how the oil level is measured? I wonder if the system is integrated to the pump somehow.

How did you crack your oil pan?

Hi, I have a couple of pics, attached. Will try to get better ones.
Pan was cracked by something hitting the front subframe xmember and pushing it into the pan.
I understand the pump plumbing is pretty-much that it supplies the engine and the oil flows through the turbo and drains back to the pan. There are two suctions: round screen in front, pipe goes to the sump on rear of the pan. There is another, smaller tube whcih I assume is a relief valve outlet back to the rear/sump area of the pan.
