Cruise control problem

Well I am on my 3rd used amp now and still have no cruise it worked halfass you might say on the last one and then quit altogether on last attempt.Could I have 3 bad amps the last one being a resoldered one or could my problem lie in the actuator? Did any one ever have a actuator go bad on them?I have a used one of them I can throw in also just wish I could get this thing working for the long trips.

YES! I thought my problem was simply a bad amp, had it rebuilt, and then it died. Came to find out that my bad actuator, by drawing too much current, had damaged, then eventually destroyed, the amp.

My recommendation: send both your amp and your actuator to GDL for evaluation. Will cost $60, but then you'll know for certain what's going on.

Or take it to the dealer. They have a special diagnostic tool that, for an hour's labor charge, can give you the same comprehensive assessment.

FWIW

I find the older style cruise amp works better with (is more tolerant of) an aging actuator.

Newer amps "drop" cruise more easily, they are more sensitive to inputs.

$150 or so you could go with an aftermarket unit and use the cruise control stalk.

Is it complicated to hook up the after market ones?

There are some threads with very detailed descriptions as to how to install the aftermarket ones. Certainly less expensive than rebuilt original equipment....and apprarently they work flawlessly. For myself, I wasn't confident that I could install the aftermarket ones (e.g. the Audiovox). But I'm pretty comfortable with the original units, so I stuck with that approach.
