Interchange transmissions between automatic and stick 240d's

As many of you know I have been considering swapping a 300d engine for a 240d engine. As luck would have it a running, less rusty 85 240 with leather and a sunroof has fallen into my lap for 500.00. Only issue is that it is an automatic. Will the 83 4 speed bolt without issue to the 85 automatic without any issues ? Somewhere I recall some crankshaft change in 83 or so but my brain is foggy. Use the auto diff with the stick or the 4 speed ? I know about the radiator and linkage differences and I believe the pedal cluster is plug and play. I checked to forum archive with no luck.

Bolt in swap. No worries especially if you start with two complete cars.

Thanks- that's what I thought. Should I swap the diff as well or keep the auto one . I know they are different. Would I notice much difference in MPG ?

... you have a 300D STICK and you want to put the trans into a 240? (also I thought 83 was last year for the 240... except euro grey market...)
this certainly will in NO way be a direct bolt in swap...

The 240 4 spd will bolt right up to a 83 300D 617 engine.
The 83 300D will have a 3:07 Diff and the 85 240D (that is a super rare one) will have a 3:69 diff. be good to use the 3:07 and also swap in the spedo along with it. spedo`s are geared to the Diff.

use a 240 auto X mount for the trans. and will have to shorten the shift rods, and the front section of the driveline.

please educate us with exactly what you have, and what you want to put the manual into.
thanks!

No.

The driveshaft will need to be replaced with one from a 240D automatic and the 3.07 differential will be far too tall for an OM616. A 3.46 is the tallest a 240D can manage without a reduction in economy.

confusion is why threads should be added to, not new threads created... I linked the original thread to this discussion for better understanding.

as long as both cars are 240, and you move everything that's connected to the manual box to the auto car, it's a direct parts swap. no cutting or issues.
I'd get all new shifter bushings and mounts personally.

this thread should be deleted, its just a rehash of his original thread.

sorry for the confusion, I guess I wasn't clear. As I was contemplating swapping the 300d motor into the 240 I found a better, less rusty 240 that is an automatic. I want to put the 240 4 speed into the automatic 240 and I wanted to know about swapping the diff. -should I use the auto or the manual ? Sorry again as i don't want to annoy the knowledge bank of this list

A 240d will have the same diff whether it is stick or auto.

Your statement may be correct but you did not read the post which I responded to correctly.;)
