My 80 300sd modified....

Ive only posted this over at std but i though id share some of the w116 love.

I bought this car for 1000$ awhile ago and began modifying.

Current mods are.

W115 intake cut and turned for intercooler
Front mount bumper cooler
non egr exhaust manifold
Hy35 turbo
3.5'' exhaust
rack limiter removed and torque control turned up
Added clutches in trans, pressure slightly turned up,
2.65 diff, 16x8 wheels, 245/50 tires, bilstiens, cut coils, 2nd gen w126 big brakes, new bushings lol.
boost, pyro, trans temp, ebp gauges, 160 mph speedo, std gauges, volvo electric fan, compressed bumper shocks, and more that i cant remember right now.

Last time i took it to the track 1/8th mile was 10.5 @71 mph. That night i was having trouble boosting without sliding the front tires at the tree.
Since then i have played with the timing and lift pump pressure. It will powerbrake with the 2.65 diff and 245 tires lol.

And yes it will spin 5500 rpm.

Oh and my big turbo that works just fine and doesn't surge under a load.

Welcome to the forum, with that setup, you'll be happier in the performance section I bet.
what turbo is that? it looks stock to me. (I'm not a performance junkie just yet)

I get 5 psi at 2k and 10ish at 3k and it builds to 18-19psi at 3500 and holds that steady.

Its a holset off a 5.9 cummins 2001? iirc. Its actually a decent sized turbo.

What do you mean by "added clutches in trans"?

And, is it safe to assume that you retarded your timing a few degrees to decrease turbo lag?

I was running to much pressure in the transmission and one day when it shifted into 3rd it literally split the case from to much outward pressure on one of the bands.

In one the clutch packs I removed a large spacer and added 2 extra clutches.

I should have taken more pictures of it. I wasn't really expecting the 722.1 to last much longer but so far I've got about 6k on it since I did this.

Split case. From the left side all the way to the pin on the right of the pic

As for the lag when I drip timed it i was getting a really low reading. I actually advanced it a few degrees but i still don't think it's up where it's supposed to be.

I guess it depends on what kind of driving you expect to be doing that week (or just your mood), but it takes energy to spin a turbo and it has to come from somewhere. The factory setting is one drip/sec @ 24*.

I can only imagine that you would set it around 22* at least to really start moving that wheel without much delay. -Just speculating and trying to get a feel for the setup.

You're brave to tear the trans... Too many special tools for me to not do it the way I would want to. How did the rest of the clutch packs look?

Not very familiar with the chassis, except today I was under one pulling pistons and realized the potential of the front suspension for upgrading / stiffening. How fast are you going in that first picture in the first post?

Also, no imbedding in this forum, but there is a 'video forum' that you can embed in then link to.

I'd like a good shot to see how you have your intercooler mounted.

I like how the W116 feels and handles...which for a car this size and age is pretty good.

With this turbo I have a 1.1-1.2 :1 drive pressure/ boost ratio on the turbo at 19 psi.

As for the intercooler I'll get a pic to you when I get home this evening.
The bumper is moved in and up along with being trimmed. I put 2 tabs off the front lower core support and if you look I had to trim the bottom of the grill for clearance.

Thanks.....might not work for me...since I'm running Euro bumpers, but it might give me an idea that will work for me ( I might end up selling what I have and geting an air-water unit). I have enough issues with EGT and engine temps when its above 90F with the AC running I want to get the intercooler mounted....ithe car is in primer right now with the front fenders and bumpers off and nearly ready for a respray as soon as I finish a few spots int he back (yeah its taken far too long to finish). If I have to cut or tweak anything now is the time to do it.

Also noticed from the pictures....you don't have a control rod on your transmission? I know my '79 has one.

What is the average temperature (with no Inter/After Cooler) of the Intake Air in the Intake Manifold when the Stock Turbo is Boosting?

No idea.....I assume fairly high when you get to double digit boost numbers, I only have a boost and EGT guage...not an IAT guage. Ambient temps will play a factor too.

Thats why you really should intercool when running at any higher boost levels than these are stock. Higher IATs WILL result in higher EGTs which are fatal to the engine if allowed to get too high.

My w123 pump is unmolested except for the manditory ALDA adjustment.

But my W116 has been tweaked and adjusted, to the point controlling EGT's to a safe level became a concern.

Pretty much off topic, but....

What does the decal under your rear plate say?

I had seen pics of your car over on the other list and it's incredible. Congrats on all the work.
