vibration maybe driveline? 300SD turbo automatic

hello

i have a new-to-me 1981 300SD turbo Automatic 347k miles.
I have a vibration (not a fast one like a hum).
it occurs about 15 mph, 25mph, and 35mph (not so much in between) during normal acceleration. It is stronger when being heavier on the pedal.

this happens every time when driving.

It appears to me the flex disk was recently changed. out-of-balance driveline?

the transmission shifts from 1st, 2nd, 3rd very quickly (low speed) just FYI.

the rear axles seem fine, no "clunking". I swapped tires with my 240D to see if it was bad rims/tires, no change.

I did some searching, and could only find driveline vibrations (humming). I sure appreciate help, even if it's telling me how to do a search to find this. I'm at a loss, and I feel terrible about this car, it hurts that i bought this car and may have been really taken.

Guy

Have you inspected the all the Rubber stuff on the Drive Line?

If the Flex Discs have been replaced recently there is also some $50 centering bushings that they might not have replaced that could be worn.

Also the instuctions (if I am remembering it correctly) for tightening the Coupling Nut on the Driveshaft are to put the Car on all 4 wheels and Trans and neutral and push the Car back and forth a little to center the Drive Shaft.
And, then tighten the Coupling Nut.

If your year and model has a Boden (Bodwen?) Cable that is what you adjust to change when the shifts occur (the adjustment is up there on the Valve Cover where all those levers are).

Yes, Bowden cable. There is good info on adjusting the tranny at this thread: '81SD new transmission goes clunk. I installed a used transmission and got the shifting sorted out perfectly with the help of Kerry - who knows his stuff. You probably got a great car in the 81 SD - I am original owner of mine - just take your time and sort it out. You will never have to replace it (almost).

i appreciate this. i hope you're right Tyl. it's such a hurtful feeling getting taken when buying a car.

i put it up on the rack (my cousin works for an auto shop) we put the car in drive and got it up to about 20mph. the front of the driveshaft (not immediately where it goes into the tranny, but right behind the flex disk) it has a wobble. touching the bottom of it made my finger go up-and-down. I am hoping the flex disk is out. it looks fine, my hope is that it's something i cant see.

i sure appreciate further advice if someone has some. should i take it out (does the driveline shield come off easy??) and take it to a driveline shop? should i just replace the disk?

My car has 347k, which is what my 240D has. the 240 is very strong and i figure will give me another 200k. do you think the 300SD will give me another 200k miles too? it blows smoke when cold starting. When warm, no smoke.

I sure appreciate this.

smoke on starting is usually a glow plug issue.
there is a bearing on the shaft, mounted in a rubber mount and a Ujoint as well. I'd pull the driveshaft and inspect the flex discs and everything else on the shaft if there is a vibration.

Also, verify that the flex disk is installed correctly. I had someone work on mine and installed them backwards. This resulted in quite a bit of vibration. Here is a thread talking about how to install them: Flex Disc Orientation, safety and durability issue.

I definitely see i need to check a lot of things. i hope i didn't waste $1350 on this car.

i don't remember seeing a middle connection between two drivelines when my cousin had the car on the hoist. we just noticed it vibrating, and the flex disks at the front/back looked fine. I bet it's this center bearing and/or bearing support. I see a bearing is $25 and support is $25

Is the carrier bearing and support collar under the heat shield?

The heat shield is held on with a bunch of 8mm socket head screws. remove them and the shield drops right off.

the driveline is in 2 pieces like your 240D is.

with 347K miles, things do wear out and need to be replaced, you have a 30 yr old car. I doubt you wasted $1350, the car just needs some wear and tear items replaced that have been neglected.

I replaced the u-jount on the 85 300D at about the same milage as yours. there was play in the joint. with the shield off, grab both pieces of driveline and see if there is play in the joint.

I had a driveline shop replace the joint and center bearing, think it was $256.
