what makes a thread go "poof"?

Unless I dreamed the whole thing ...somebody had started a thread on a VNT turbo project, and I was just getting interested in... when today, no thread to be found.

What causes this?

Did OP retract the whole thread, server lost it, moderator axed it, was a dream... ???

libbybapa 09-04-2011 10:59 AM

I retracted the thread after trolls turned it into a nitpick fest about the use of proper model designation.

I discovered the "ignore" feature recently. You can have a thread and try to auto-ignore posts from people who add little value. It's easy to use.

Full disclosure: I just commented on a new "TDT" thread, but the intent is more pre-emptive than anything else. Somebody will inevitably bring it up.

Too bad about your thread. Maybe you can start another one about oil? Or R-12 vs. R-134a. I love those!

I am sorry to hear this. What you've done is rich!

I believe your VNT mod may be more appreciated in the performance forum. People are generally more accepting there of any mechanical "impurities" being applied to a Benz.

I am seriously interested in your work and wish you'd resume the discussion. I was at the point of trying to source a 2nd hand VNT turbo from VW...

I had been posing about RPM controlled vs throttle, and removal of ALDA, and wanted to know the driving experience (how the pull feels) difference from stock setup... to name a few things. I would consider using my electronics skills to control the VNT perhaps with a stepper motor.

Anyway, thanks for considering restarting your thread if you do.

The death knell for the thread was when I was told by someone that in adding the superfluous "T" in 300TDT, I was ignorant and that no one would care if I ever posted again. Considering that, I think I'll just stick to selfishly asking questions, maybe hassling other folks a bit and posting what I consider to be superfluous nonsense like this post and avoid posting anything of substance about my own projects and innovations. :D Don't worry about me, I'm doing fine. ;)

I understand exactly what you are talking about. As soon as I saw that BS starting, I said to my self, well there goes another good member.

I have used the PM system quite a bit, but it does not allow other like minded members to see the information that is shared.

May be there is a way to have an underground section, where only a select group can post, but others can see?

Regardless, Thank you for posting, My thoughts on my project have branched out because of your posts.

On a side note;

Is the Ignore option a real thing? If so, how does one employ it?

Ignore is real and easy:

Upper left corner, click on User CP.

Settings and Options, click Edit Ignore List

Add a Member to Your List, click Okay.

Posts from the member(s) on the ignore list don't show up if you're signed in. You know they're there, but they say something like "content hidden because member X is on your ignore list."

Think of it like caller ID.

I'm happy to delete all the troll stuff, and fix the thread if you like.
there's no reason to remove a thread!

just hit the warning triangle and report any troll activity, and I'll infract the wrongdooers and edit the thread to get it back on track.

Actually listening to old women shows a lack of AWESOME. Some are incapable of lifting their AWESOME level and must resort to LAME injections...

The fact that I may have missed some DIESEL AWESOME makes me sad...

netboy 09-04-2011 01:07 PM

I too was very interested in that thread. I tried to get it back on track by using the old "MEANWHILE BACK AT THE RANCH" line. Can you get a pic of your intercooler and a closeup of the turbo? (how its attatched)

I think all mods and tweaks are interesting, some more than others. A forum is a place to share ideas of a common interests, and ignore the negative. Cause, unfortunately there is negative.

vstech 09-04-2011 01:11 PM

I'm editing the original thread, and handling the bickering.
I'll put it in the performance section.
thank you for the thread, and continued PeachParts participation!

Or just put it on STD. There is not a single member there who does not modify his car.

Is there any way to create a "troll list" of known flamers so you can see their flame rating and ignore their posts when they flame your post or others?

I understand (I think) how you feel. I haven't always parted with all of my know how / information because I think a thread is going sour - in those situations I felt it was best just to "bang out"...

Consider this though - if you add people to an ignore list you could end up being on a lonely forum. <= the word "you" is being used in a general not personal case here!

Lonely / empty forum = blog.

There is always the chance that the troll gives perfectly useful information on a different thread. You could be missing out.

I advocate the involvement of the moderators in this matter - whether you click on the warning triangle or PM or even openly post "Hey mods can you delete the unhelpful contributions above please?"

You could consider it this way round - trolls need hedumacation too!

Marvelicious 09-04-2011 04:22 PM

I imagine some of my post might be considered trolls by some, but I generally just intend them as light humor which I don't really feel is a big problem. Maybe others don't agree? I don't subscribe to the theory that any deviation from the topic at hand is necessarily a bad thing. Granted, things sometimes go a little far afield, but in general I feel like the Mods do fairly well keeping things in line.

As for the thread in question, I was a little puzzled by the TDT nitpicking myself, which led to my moot definition post, which was intended to poke a little fun at those being anal about the TDT thing. I guess I should have posted my question above the joke...
