New 84 300D

Just got a 1984 300D.

This car is from the US, and was imported up here. It is a federal version, but was sold in california it looks like. Is that possible?

Got it for $1700cdn, which I think is a great price considering the condition of the body. There appears to be no rust on the car. I think this is a first for me, and not just with W123s. Even my '01 golf has a few tiny spots. thank you california!

Mileage is 227,000 miles.

Interior is complete and not in too bad shape, just a tiny bit shaggy in a couple of spots. Air cleaner bracket was broken, air filter super dirty. Antennae doesn't go up and down, sunroof is stuck, missing two small trim pieces, hood pull is gone, turn signals blow a fuse, wipers aren't working. haven't investigated the HVAC stuff yet, but the blower works and blows hot air, which is good enough for me for right now. clear headlight surrounds are both cracked :-(, rear passenger window doesn't go down, needs an oil change.

So far I've replaced the air filter and bracket, cleaned out the housing, and cleaned out the banjo bolt. Tonight I will replace the combination switch and see if that corrects the wipers, turn signal issues. The four-way flashers work perfectly. cross your fingers!

I'll update this with pictures soon.

sluggish so far, valve timing and fuel filters should help some.

Yes, do the Valve Adjustment.

A good inspection of the rubber parts is in order. Oil Cooler Hoses, Motor Mounts (if the drivers side collapses the power steering belt can cut into the hose), Transmission Mount, Flex Discs on the Drive Shaft, Drive Support and the rear CV Axle Boots.

Only time will tell if you got a good deal.

I do not know about cars from overseas but California allows non-California Emissions Cars to be bought and registered here as long as the meet their definition of a Used Vehicle; so this may also apply to imported Cars.
However, I think the might investigate someone who brought over a bunch of them.

I haven't had it up on the hoist yet, but i'll check bushings, tranny mount, flex discs, etc. this weekend perhaps.

The CV boots aren't leaking, but have those usual wee cracks indicating failure won't be too far off.

The oil cooler hoses feel sturdy, but one has an ominous little wet spot that had better get investigated.

The motor mounts probably should get done at some point here.

here are some photos. Engine bay shots pending.

i just noticed that the turbo looks different from my other cars, it has a funny valvey-looking thing on the compressor side scroll casing. looks like it had a vacuum line attached to it, but the rubber boot has broken and the vacuum line is hanging free. anybody know what that might be?

There were two turbos used, you may have a KKK unit.

That would be the waste gate hose.

no, not the wastegate hose...it's like a big giant valve-looking thing, casted into the compressor scroll casing.

You're probably looking at the ARV?

Is it the metal thing the golf tee is plugging in this pic?

Ah, that was on the 85's, first time I've seen it on anything earlier.

It's part of the egr system and can be blocked off as per post #11.

The attachment shows how to block off the egr completely, courtesy of a member here.

thanks Zach and RML! Yes I think the colour is anthracite. The interior is tobacco I believe.

Made some good progress this evening. Got the turn signals and wipers going, combination switch from gertie did the trick. also installed the hood pull. lubed all the door hinges and the throttle linkage with some fluid film. she's coming together. i think i will mess about with some of the vacuum junk and maybe get rid of some of it, per that diagram. thanks, toomany. valve timing and oil change are coming soon.
