why 2 sets of holes in the air filter bracket?

disclaimer: i've searched!

i replaced the rubber mounts and heat shields in my 85 300d, and there was less vibration/rattling in my air filter. my bracket is NOT broken, but the holes that the mounts attach to are quite oval now, due to the thing rattling around for so long. but it still shakes quite a bit.

i notice there is another set of holes (with good threads) in the bracket about an inch toward the rear from the other set. why are there two sets? for a different turbo? i have the KKK. i'd like to use the other set of holes, to eliminate the vibration, but the boot to the turbo won't align after i move the whole air cleaner back an inch.

should i drill new holes in the bottom of the air cleaner? make some sort of sleeve to compensate for the difference in the turbo boot length? thanks

Can you make it tight with nuts and lockwashers on the bottom side? My car has nuts there, I assume to help keep the mounts from backing out.

I wondered about that other set of holes, too. I have an '81 300TD with an AiResearch turbo and mine uses the front set of holes.

I think there was another thread about different mounting techniques, to include something like installing a stud (basically a long screw) through the bracket instead of using the rubber mounts. That may/may not have included re-purposing the old rubber as a shock for the stud-style mount.

I don't know if the stud would transmit more vibration, so be worse; or anchor the filter better, so as to stop it from rattling around and be better.

If you pull the metal flat and stud off both ends of the bumper, drill a hole through the bumper and reinstall it with a long bolt, you will almost never need to replace the bumpers again. No idea about the second set of holes; my 81 SD has them too.

Not all OM617s use the same mounting arrangement. Beyond that I cannot be specific.

But I do know that I had a spare bracket with bumpers in place that I had pulled off an '83 US Fed 300sd parts car, that I used later my '82 (which had a later, Cali-spec motor installed) and I had to relocate the bumpers to the other holes. Two of the three, if my memory works.
