Agree on Oilburners being an awesome site. My factory manuals show the C6 being used up til 89, but I have never personally seen one past 87 either. Could be they used them in the f-superduties? Love your 87! I have 2 of them. They had the 6.9 with the improved headbolts and glowplug system, and no cavitation problems like the 7.3. The best year IMO.

Maybe it was a fleet option? Fleet buyers could often order combinations not available to the general public. I could see some of them possibly having a preference for the C6, especially if they already had a lot of C6-equipped trucks in the fleet. (Sameness is goodness when you have to maintain a lot of them.)

I may be wrong. I never have seen or heard of anyone having a c6 post '87 but I am not a guru. Maybe it is a diesel thing, and little gas motors kept using it? I would be more apt to go with the super/450 though...

Another thing I like about '87 is the only year (maybe wrong here too ) that has a manual lever for RECIRC, so you can use it without the A/C if you want.

BTW, I am referring to North American made trucks. Not the ones made in S. America !! That just may be the reason you are seeing C6 listed come to think of it.
The S.American ones (which is where Aussies got there's) didn't update the body to the 'flat nose' until '88, they also never used the N.American ('87-'91) interior.

I had an '88 E 350 with a 7.3 and the only auto available was the C6. I believe the E4OD was a creation of the early nineties, about the time the engine went to the serpentine belt.

Nice truck. I had a 94idi turbo in my bronco. I just retired the engine to my shed and bought a 97 f-250 with the psd. The idi is a great motor. The only thing I did to mine in 6 years a set of glow plugs and fuel return o-rings. Still ran great with 200k on it. It was strong enough to break 4 zf5 transmissions, 6 bw1356 transfer cases, every axle in the front Dana 60, and 1 10.25" rearend. I had a few things done to mine though.

I was just at my neighbors ranch and there was an 88 f150 with a 351w and a C6 there that belonged to a friend of his! I haven't paid attention to the gassers as I am mostly a diesel guy so I guess they were used after 87. I learn something new every day despite my efforts not to

GOt the truck home and started to play with it yesterday. Found a local guy parting out 4 of them and has able to get some good deals, like a pair of almost new tires on the rims for 50 bucks, a perfect grill for 10 bucks and even one of the fiberglass sun visors you put on the cab for another 10 bucks. All's on the truck except for the visor which I think I'll put on today.

He also sold me a full set of aluminum running boards that came off a 4 door dually for 40 bucks... which will replace the after-marked rusted out crap currently on the truck.

Truck runs good. Has a starting issue, like it has some dead glow plugs... I'll be troubleshooting that today. The fuel tank don't read right, empty on the rear tanks actually at the 1/4 mark and the front at 3/4 mark.

Found a new tow bar for 50 bucks and will be mounting it to the 81 for the trip today.

But A/C works. CC works, lights all work, When we swapped the tired around we checked the brakes and they are all new. The rear seals where fine. And what the PO thought was a bad lower control arm turns out to be a disintegrated bushing in the anti sway bar cause by oil leaking on it... 30 buck fix. I have the set of new valve cover gaskets sitting here, so I'll put those on today which will solve that leak.

I ended up getting the truck for 900 bucks. My diesel mechanic offered me 1800 for it yesterday when I stopped by lol.

Plan is to leave on friday to head up and pick up that engine for my 85 300D

When you replace the glow plugs (all 8), purchase them from a Ford dealer- do not accept any substitutes. This system requires 8 good GP's in order for it to work at all. The OEM plugs are made by Beru IIRC.

After getting the truck home I found it a real bear to start. tested out the glow plugs, both with a light and with an omh meter and they where all perfect.

So I installed a new glow relay, and well...

I leave tomorrow to take the gold 81 behind it to it's new home.

Ran over to a guys place that's parting out a few of these and picked up a new grill, a fiberglass sunshade, and a pair of mounted tires for a total of 80 bucks... removed the crappy runny boards and straitened the front bumper a little and here's where it's at...
