vacuum shutoff

1993 300d. I was fishing some wires into the passenger cabin and apparently knocked loose the vacuum to the ignition. Using my Mighty Vac I can pull vacuum all the way up to that point. For a temp crappy solution I've run a spare piece of hose into the cabin and plugged the MV into it to pull vac to shut the thing down and that works.

Anyway, I can see where the brown/blue hose goes thru the firewall in a wrapped bundle and I can see up behind the dash just a glimpse of what appears to be two pieces of vacuum tubing.. both look to be blue/brown. How do I get back up in there to tshoot this? Do I have to rip out the dash? And if so how hard is it and where's some pics/instrux?

Thanks everyone!

Hoses go to a vacuum switch on the side of the ignition switch behind the key. You may be able to reach your hand up once you remove the kick panel and feel the vacuum switch. It's in an awkard place. It might be necessary to remove the whole ignition switch assembly to access it. Lots of threads on that topic. Doesn't take to long.
Don't need the Mity Vac in the meantime. God gave us all the first instinct for sucking tit just so that later in life we'd be prepared to shut off our own diesels.

oy

I tried with no success. I don't suck as hard as you I guess?

Thanks for the advice. I'll see if I can find the thread on pulling out the ignition switch.

hmm

Maybe I didn't try hard enough. I'll try again tomorrow. The Might Vac kills it just fine though... Plus I didn't try three times. Just like once or twice. I hadn't really expected it to work so I wasn't persistent.

You might be able to reach the vacuum switch by removing the gauge cluster. Otherwise check the DIY guide for replacing the combination switch to remove the lower dash panel for access from below the switch.

Maybe. The problem is that the switch is on the right hand side of the ignition switch.

D'oh

Fortunately this was easy. One of the brown lines coming off the main line from the brake booster was loose... I love/hate vacuum.
