power steering leak at steering box adjustment nut (85 300TDT)

i just bought this car and the previous owner alerted me to this power steering fluid leak at the steering box adjustment nut:

Update: Snugging the 19mm nut was all that was needed. No more leak.

he said it's just a drip so he didn't get it fixed - he just topped up the ps fluid every once in a while.

i don't think he tried adjusting or tightening the nut, and i haven't yet either.

could the fix be as simple as tightening the 19mm nut? or is there a seal beneath it that may need replacing? thanks!

This is not uncommon. The bottom sector shaft bearing is probably worn and the seal is definitely shot. In several regards, the steering box of a 123 car is NOT the cars strong point.

Edit: I went off half cocked. After looking at that again, it appears to be the slack adjuster. You can probably reseal it by cleaning it thoroughly and using silicone seal or something. If you do remove it, make SURE that the box is correctly adjusted. This is a safety issue.

If you are interested about the adjustment and what sits underneath the adjustment screw have a look at this thread

What a feeling it will be! A properly adjusted W123 / W116 / W126 power steering box

Please read the warning about just "nipping up" this screw.

EDIT:-

If you too are wondering about Larry's "Walt Kowalski" comment under his user name I'm not too proud to admit I googled it and I got this:-

There is a seal under the nut, or maybe even molded to the nut. I bought a car with the nut simply loose and leaking; snugging was enough.

You'll want to change your primer pump, too.
