w124 spring perch pre-failure

Took my 87 300d into my indy to have the transmission sorted out. I had him go over the suspension because i knew some components needed replacement. He immediately called me back and had me come back down there to show me the spring perch on each side had started to separate!

Above is the passenger side, the driver side is much worse...
sorry about the bad picture, but you can clearly see the light colored garage floor through the crack.

He thinks the seperation is due to the PO fitting shorter Eibach springs as well as ill fitting struts. I called around to about 11 body shops. The few shops that knew what I was talking about also knew they couldn't do it. I finally found one willing to to the job. they quoted me 500 to weld up both sides. this doesnt include the spring perches if they cant use the old ones.

Will update when more info comes in...

Sorry for the late late reply I kind of gave up on the vehicle after several misfortunes. It's the strut tower that is actually separating from the wheel well. The previous owner lowered the vehicle with Springs but never changed the struts. Continuous bottoming out led to the strut tower separating. I think he may have had an accident as well.

I had both sides welded by a body shop. They also installed the stock Springs. Several months later I had a ball joint failure on my driver side, on the highway. The concussion split the weld and the tower started to separate again. I'm considering selling the vehicle as a parts car but we'll see.

That's too bad, some folks just need to stick with the Honda's and VW's.

Is that a dig at me David? I know where I went wrong. Was it not having the car inspected by a shop before I bought it? Yes. Was it throwing money at a terminal problem? Yes. But are you suggesting I don't deserve to own anything but a Honda or a VW?

I would assume this was referring to the previous owner.

My 1987 300TD wagon was sold and my 2003 W210 E320 wagon was totaled (sheds tear).

Sorry if I jumped to conclusions, I have a great deal of feelings about that car.
