W115 clock repair

Does anybody know how to access the mechanism on this type of clock? If you try to remove the chrome bezel you just end up destroying the chrome because to get it out, you have to pry the edges to the point that they can never be round again.

It appears that these clocks are not designed to be accessed. Is this the case?

if it's a 'VDO keinzel' clock you have to pry the bezel off to open it. it's doable.

No, it is not a Keinzel clock. At least it doesn't say Keinzel.

Also, how do you take the adjustment dial off? I tried to pry it off a spare one I had, and I just cracked the plastic. What is the secret to getting that off without using force?

Why fix it? just get a quartz clock out of a newer MB. It will say quartz on its face. Did that on my 114. Works perfect.

Clock

remove the entire cluster, put on table, back end up, and start removing the plates that are in the way until you have the access to the clock, from behind/front, after removed from the housing. Then you can replace the clock.

I like using a newer Quartz clock as a good alternative . . . nice to know they are appropriate size.

Picco, I know how to remove the clock. I don't know how the clock housing is accessed without a) cracking the plastic lens when pulling on the adjustment knob, and b) removing the chrome bezel without prying it out of shape.

Mark.

What other years have the same size clock and same mounting points?

the bezel has to be pried away from the clock housing. the adjusting knob will also pry off but they can be pretty tight.

not sure how the clock is mounted in the dash but usually this edge of the bezel is not visible when the clock is installed in the dash.

I believe I got mine from a 116 chassis. With the cluster on the bench face down, you remove 2 nuts retaining the clock. Raise the cluster from the bench and the clock falls out. Be gentle reinstalling the new one, I cracked a circuit board by overtightening mine.

Punk, have you been able to remove the bezel without destroying the perfectly round shape? Once that chrome is misshapen, that's it. Does the adjustment knob pull straight out?

Also, how do you take off the needles? I tried popping them off on my test clock, and again they would not budge.

Okay, I finally got it out. Getting it back in is another story.

Problem now is that all the components look good. The capacitors and resistors are all good. I can see no defective parts. Yet it does not work.

Got it out? or reassembled? Alot of work for an old points type clock that will quit again once working. The updated quartz is the only way to go.

I would have to disagree, based on my experience with my clock on my '83 300D. Pierre fixed mine when I first brought the car home to Florida, and it's still working. May be something simple like grounding.
