Replacing A/C Clutch, 80 300d
The A/C clutch went out the other day and I need to replace it. Can I do it with the compressor in the car? Any special tools? Thanks for your help.

Which compressor? York or GM R4?

R4 is the compressor. I don't want to disconnect the hoses, evacuate system and recharge. The A/C was working fine until the clutch started making a noise. If possible I would like to replace clutch while still connected to car or if enough room/hose length unbolt compressor and replace clutch.

It would be tough but it may be possible. You would probably have to pull the radiator (Which included the oil cooler lines on my 300SD. Could be a can of worms), PS pump and associated stuff to gain access.
I would find a shop to evacuate the system (Hard to find if you're using R12) and pull the compressor. You can rent the puller at parts stores and it's not a hard job pulling the compressor. My clutch went out and damaged the nose of the compressor so you may want to consider that before you dig into it. Good luck! |
