I am indeed the family wrench, my dad very very lightly works on cars (at least mechanically, he does mostly cosmetic stuff) I fix ALL of them. Next weekened I'm doing my bro's CV axles on his 300D..... My siblings still live with my parents, they're all about 4 miles away in another part of the city. I clearly label which cars are who's in my sig.....for a large part of the year my dad also depends on only one car, used to be his SD, (the retired one) but his 420 has taken its place for winter.

I've never had to borrow any car other than my wife's for about 2 days when I had to replace my transmission 2.5 years ago. The SD has a 99.8% availability record at this point. The only time I've driven any of the others is testing them after a repair, same as the dealer would do.

Few cars I know of can cover 106k without breaking down, ever.

As for a rental car, I could bike to a Hertz/Enterprise facility in about 6-8 mins from my house. Easy. Or take the bus. All available options where I live.
