I think it may be time to change out the cable when the plastic piece gets fully extended.

Your pic is interesting. It looks like the same part is broken off on yours. Out of the pic to the left, is there a free-floating black piece with some white plastic within it? That's what I have....it looks like it was originally connected to the end of the screw drive.

Now I'm figuring it out: the broken piece, still threaded on the cable, is what prevents the adjusting screw from becoming unscrewed too far. But as long as it's screwed to basically that point, there shouldn't be any problems....unless somehow vibrations or what not could cause it gradually to unscrew.

I think that's basically where I am....fully extended then piece broke.

I looked at my parts car today... it's broken.
also, my 87TD had a starter go bad, and I broke that part while I was changing it... a little plastic jb weld and it's as good as new.
