caster bushing

hello,
i have an 81 240d automatic with a 198k miles on it.

I just had my car in the shop to have my oil filter housing replaced. While it was there I had them check out some noise I was getting in the front end of the car.

they told me my caster driver side caster bushing was worn. He was going to email me a quote. I havent recieved it yet. I was just curious if anyone has any experience with this. Should it be expensive. Can I do it myself or is it pressed in?

thanks

Jake

Guide mount??? (I forgot - Peachparts has them) You will want to do both sides if the system is like the SD. I did the job on the ground in the gravel. BFH to remove old. Lube & getting everything aligned then tightening bolts to install new. I used a ratchet strap to align. Local indy said he pounds them in and out. He's expensive and I don't go to him.

Go into the Resources tab at the top, a lot of good DIY jobs in there with pictures.

Here is the front end rebuild for the W123
PeachPartsWiki: Front End Suspension Rebuild

Go down to #12, this is what I think your mechanic is talking about.

Good pics. Guide rod mount is "only" held in with a few bolts. R&R wasn't as casually easy as the description. Proper tools including a rack would have the job done in under an hour per side. Anyone know what time the book calls for?

Actually the bushing is in the LCA, but for the sake of argument I'll assume the mechanic misspoke himself :D
