LOL yeah Army that is a bit more than I want to tackle. . . it sounds good though. I suppose if I had a shop or an inside place to work on it at that I would try it though. I think I will stick with the diaphragm and IP for right now. I did find a slip in the glove compartment where the previous owner had taken the car in to be checked due to she thought that there was a water leak around the water pump... hopefully this is where the loss of coolant is coming from. It is really slow and the car will, sometimes not always, heat up when idling for a long period of time in drive or reverse where the engine is turning slowly. Just as soon asyou begin moving or rev the engine, it jumps right back to normal. I'm thinking not a head gasket issue because of all the clues. Hopefully just the IP or Diaphragm, probably a vaccum pump diaphragm as well just to be safe and hopefully that will take care of it. HOPEFULLY :-) we shall see. I think that all of the above should get it right though...

Keep us informed Ron.
I'd like to see one of your (soon to be legendary) videos of the car working properly!

I must say, I do like your videos. They have a certain documentary quality to them, rare in diagnostic footage, kind of like the Blair Witch Project, but about Mercedes.

If I were you I would strip the first 240D you show for as many goodies as I could pay for. Those oil free tubes do suggest that the scrap yard car are a good sign but that might not be the case. Still if you can get the parts for a good price it might be a gamble worth taking.

I like the fact that the subplot has changed from caterpillars to women.
I think you're right about the vacuum pump feeding oil into the engine and causing someone to think the engine was bad. I'd probably buy the IP from the junkyard but just transfer the diaphragm from the junkyard one over to the other car to avoid having to deal with timing the new pump.

For all practical purposes there are just no older mercedes laying around my part of the country anymore. There apparently still are in yours. This is a real break that they still are in your area.
Since his parts prices are so reasonable. You may want to take all the components dealing with the four speed manual transmission to convert yours someday. They should be resalable for far more than you are going to pay him if you do not use them. Fifteen dollars for an injection pump is like him almost giving it to you in this economy. I visualise he has had no activity or demand for parts from this car. Still that is dirt cheap. Transmission, flywheel, clutch, driveshaft, pedal assembly etc for say 50.00 or less would probably never come your way again. If you like your car then if and when the automatic failed you would have a cure that would make it a different car. Or eventually sell the total package for a few hundred dollars. These things are getting closer to being scarce all the time. |
