'85 190d remove center console?
I must be a lousy searcher as I didn't hit anything with this.
I'm trying to clean 26 years of the PO's crud out of the interior of my newly aquired 190d automatic. Pulled the seats and snapped out the carpets that cover the flat parts of the floor. Stalled out attempting to remove the console as the shifter handle didn't want to come off. How does the handle fit onto the shaft? Is it threaded? Where are the bolts holding the console to the trans hump? How do you remove the remaining carpets up the sides or would it be easier to shampoo them in the car? Are there drain holes in the floor pan if I get some water in there or is that a bad idea? Thanks in advance! |

There are two consoles, upper and lower. The upper has about 4 screws holding it. You must remove the center vents to get to two of them. The others are on the side. The lower console has 5 screws as I recall, two on either side of front and rear, and one in the center in the back. You have to remove all the little things also, like the brake handle. The gearshift knob doesn't come off. You have to pop the wood up and remove the center rubber covering from it, then remove the wood leaving the rubber and gearshift there. It's pretty intuitive, just a lot of little things you have to do.

No rubber on my automatic gear selector knob - sounds as if your describing a stick shift?

Nope. Auto. The black center portion is held into wood with a rubber moulding. That pops off. Gearshift knob is moulded on; not removable.
