When doing a diesel purge...

I see you have to either clamp off the fuel lines or put a bolt to keep the diesel from flowing out. I dont want to clamp it because I have not yet replaced the lines and I dont want to damage them. What size bolts do you use to stick in the lines to prevent leakage? The car is an 84 300sd by the way...

I use the supply line plugged into the return line.

Unclamp the supply line at the primary filter, hold it up. Unclamp the return line, while holding it up, stick the rubber supply line on the metal return line. This will keep your tank from dumping on the ground.

Answer

you remove both hoses from the body lines, and cap/plug the steel body lines..
Put both of the rubber hoses in the bottom of the diesel purge can.

I've never plugged any lines when I do a diesel purge. You'll get a little drip in the beginning, but it won't flow out if nothing's pulling it out. You can just take a short loop of hose and make it go from the supply to the return. No clamps are needed if it's a tight fit.

Not all cars are TD's. Sedan fuel tanks are different. When substantially full, much of the fuel in a sedan tank is higher than the supply line in the engine compartment. Gravity will "pull" it out.

Why did you assume I was talking only about TDs? I've diesel purged my 240 several times and never plugged the lines. I'm not say nothing will come out, but I only get a few drips and then dry.

It probably had something to do with the fact that you chose to be less than clear about what it was that you were talking about.

That is certainly possible. But it is not reliably repeatable. Someone with a full fuel tank, or with the car facing down hill, will have a different experience. The laws of physics guarantee it.

Here's how it went. I went to NAPA and bought about 3' of fuel line and used that to hook up to the primary filter andjust used to cigar hose on the other filter. The unused line did drip steady but not too too much. I released the gas cap pressure and had about 1/2 tank with the car parked level. The diesel purge didn't turn black and I didn't see any gunk in there. Not sure how much difference this made but the car does not have a whole lot of miles but does sit a lot. Or it used to anyway. I drove it about 200 miles afterward to go check out the Bastrop fire damage. The car drove great and today I saw black smoke come out of my tail pipe during the day for the first time ever. It was not a lot though. Not sure if this is related to the diesel purge or not. Thanks for all of the replies.

Glad you got if figured out. I've had cars where diesel purge didn't really do much, and others where it made a big difference. If you've been running biodiesel at B20 or higher you're probably keeping the fuel system clean. I've found that it makes the biggest difference in cars that have been sitting for a while and have the system gummed up.
Even though you didn't see a big change it's good preventative maintenance. Not every job results in big changes, it's nice when they do, but the preventative stuff important too.

Yeah I have not been able to find any biodiesel here. Maybe one day I'll take a trip to Austin so I can do a little cleaning.
