W124 TYC headlight connectors
Sharing information for folks swapping OE candles for decent illumination -
I got a set of TYC headlights for the 86-93 W124. It came with the required 6-pin connectors. I later swapped them for OE Euro headlights. I sold the TYC headlights with OE 6-pin connectors. The buyers reported that the OE connectors don't work with the TYC headlights. I don't have a good picture of the TYC headlight side socket but you can sort of see it here on the far left - Note the gray post to the left of the pins (there's another post to the right of the pins) and white posts towards the bottom. I suspect these posts get in the way of seating the OE connector. The big white post above the pins is the fitting for vertical adjustment vacuum signal. Here's a picture of OE (left) and TYC (right) connectors - Note that the OE connector has a broad flat surface while the TYC connector is more sculpted around the pins. So, if you're going to install a set of TYC headlights, make sure you have a suitable set of connectors. The converse isn't a problem - the TYC connectors work properly with OE Euro headlights. Since I swapped connectors to send the TYC connectors to the patient and understanding buyer, I took note of the pin outs for the benefit of the forum. Note that the reference vehicle is a 1987 300D. YMMV - Driver side: pin 1 = blank, unused pin 2 = brown, ground pin 3 = pin 4 = white/black, high beam pin 5 = yellow/black, low beam pin 6 = gray/green, fog light Passenger side: pin 1 = blank, unused pin 2 = brown, ground pin 3 = pin 4 = gray, high beam pin 5 = yellow, low beam pin 6 = green, fog light Here is a poor quality picture of the passenger side connector showing the pins. The numbers above correspond to the numbering on the connector. You can just see the numbers beside each pin in the picture of the sockets. I didn't verify but expect the pins on the headlight sockets are numbered correspondingly - The red wire taps into the corner lamp park wire so the city light illuminates with the park lights. The rest of the wires were transferred from the OE DOT 4-pin connector. Sixto 87 300D Last edited by sixto; 10-14-2011 at 02:47 PM. |
